Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award winner (and former New York candidate for governor) Cynthia Nixon talked to Us Weekly about her transgender son, Seph, 22, at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 29. Nixon was at the festival for the world premiere of her project Stray Dolls when she was asked about Samuel Joseph Mozes (Seph’s full name).
“I’m very proud of him. It’s one of those things. I felt really weird using the other pronoun in public, but people didn’t know it yet,” the former Sex and the City actor said to Us Weekly at the premiere. “He was good with it, and it was really nice, actually, when we announced it. There was some general, you know, voicings of support but generally it was not a big deal… I was kind of shocked at what a non-event it was, which is just how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time.”
Nixon praised Seph last year on Instagram when he graduated from the University of Chicago in June 2018. The day, June 22, coincided with the 14th Annual Trans Day of Action:
In that post, Nixon wrote, “I’m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month. I salute him and everyone else marking today’s #TransDayofAction. #TDOA.”
Nixon has always been an outspoken LGBTQ+ supporter — check out the excellent pic below of Nixon with the Queen City Roller Girls of Buffalo on Pride Day. Nixon is married to Christine Marinoni, with whom she shares a child, Max, 7. Nixon also shares Seph and Charles, 16, with ex Danny Mozes.
Back in 2015, Nixon penned an opinion piece on gay marriage for Variety. In it, she wrote, “Everybody has LGBT people in their family. And everybody needs to make the effort to come out in any and every way they can.”
Nixon added in the op-ed, “If people who are opposed to equality realized how many individuals they already like, admire or even love are LGBT, the battle would be over. It’s important to come out to our parents, children, co-workers, boss — you name it.”
Damn straight (pun not intended). She may not be governor of New York, but we love Nixon — and we love her message.
