Wolves might be pack animals, but this is just getting weird: Bachelor in Paradise stars Carly Waddell and Evan Bass are now the third celebrity couple to name their son Charlie Wolf(e).
The couple welcomed their second child together, Charles Wolfe, on Tuesday in what Bass described to Us Weekly as a “fast and perfect” delivery. “Everyone is doing well,” he added.
But is everyone doing well, really? Or is something going on in celebrity land that’s forcing actresses and reality stars alike to give their kids — and their second kids, at that — the same name?
Charlie Wolf(e), a fine and perfectly respectable moniker, was first used by Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik (her soon-to-be ex-husband) two years ago, after the birth of their son. Flash forward to October 2019, and Lauren Conrad her husband, William Tell, named their second son Charlie Wolf, commemorating the moment with a sweet illustration on Instagram.

Shortly after Conrad’s announcement, Deschanel told Us Weekly it was “so weird” since it’s “a really specific name.” Still, the former New Girl star brushed it off as a coincidence. “I don’t think she knew,” she added.
What are the chances that Waddell didn’t know about either Deschanel’s or Conrad’s baby boy name selection? Pretty slim, probably? Celebs have people to tell them who’s wearing what to red carpet events to avoid overlap, so it’s hard to believe they don’t also have a team advising them on the who’s who of famous spawn.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Waddell did know and just didn’t care. No one has a monopoly on human names — not even Taylor Swift or the Kardashians, who are famous for trademarking anything and everything. It’s easy to see why so many celebrities would like the name Charlie Wolf, too, says Nameberry CEO Pamela Redmond.
“Charlie Wolf is a name that in many ways has it all,” she tells SheKnows. “Charlie is a classic nickname for a boys’ name that’s as traditional as they come: Charles. But Charlie has, in recent years, become equally used for boys and girls, so it has a contemporary unisex feeling without sacrificing any masculine history.” We stan a gender-neutral name!
And while the combination of Charlie and Wolf is relatively new, Redmond says that Wolf has been around for a while. It’s “one of the trendy animal names that celebrities seem especially fond of,” she says, pointing to Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli’s 28-year-old son, Wolfgang.
Wolves aren’t the only animals on celebrities’ minds, either. Redmond notes that names like Fox, Bear, and Birdie are also getting attention. (Alicia Silverstone and Kate Winslet chose Bear for their sons; Busy Philipps and Jessica Simpson have daughters named Birdie; and actress Emma Ferguson and her husband, singer Mark Owen, named their daughter Fox.)
Despite the love for “Charlie Wolf,” Deschanel can probably rest easy knowing not too many people seem eager to copy her daughter’s middle name, Otter.
