Celeb Moms' Craziest Pumping Stories

Brooklyn Decker

The actress posted this “totally delirious” shot from the Grace and Frankie makeup trailer – taken just two weeks after giving birth to daughter Stevie! – to draw attention to the fact that while giving birth is no joke, often maternity leave in the U.S. is – and no one prepares new moms for the reality of what their bodies will go through in those first few weeks.

“The average maternity leave is 10 DAYS in the US; how is a woman leaking, bleeding and wearing a diaper supposed to care for her child, herself, or much less, her job?” she writes, adding that while she used to make recovery packages for postpartum pals, she’ll now rely on kits from Bodily (in which she’s an investor). “WHY wasn’t I warned? I refused to let my friends have this shocking experience … I wanted them to worry about motherhood and healing, that’s it.”

Carrie Underwood

This mama knows that the show must go on — even if you have to pump. Prior to her 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards performance, Underwood showed fans on Instagram how she took care of her mom duties while prepping to hit the stage.

“Getting ready for my performance… also pumping. ???‍♀️” she wrote alongside a selfie she took in full stage makeup and hair, tacking on the hashtags “#Multitasking,” “#ACMAwards,” “#Southbound” and “#LetsDoThis.”

Underwood, who welcomed her second child Jacob Bryan on January 23, clearly has this multitasking thing down.

Chrissy Teigen

Photographic evidence moms are always busy! John Legend posted this candid photo of his wife pumping in the car, en route to dinner just weeks after welcoming son Miles. “I know it’s Father’s Day and all but my wife is pretty awesome,” the Grammy winner said. “She’s taking me to dinner but still on mommy duty.”

One of Hollywood’s most honest moms, Teigen shared lots about pumping on social media following the birth of daughter Luna two years ago. Some samples?

“Fell asleep with my breast pump on and I think I’m in a different dimension now.”

“just spray tanned around my breast pump outline. the logistical challenges of a healthy beach glow while boobing are incredible.”

And, relatably, a photo of her pump on a public bathroom floor.

Nicole Phelps

Phelps — who welcomed her second son with swimming star Michael in February — took time out from a recent gala to pump for little Beckett, and shared the moment on her Instagram stories. While she got lots of support, she also got some flak from followers who thought it was inappropriate to pump in a ballroom, even with the discreet hands-free machine she was using.

“Some won’t agree with where I did this and even worse if I was sitting there with Beckett nursing people might judge me,” she wrote in a follow-up Instagram post. “But breastfeeding is NATURAL, I have to admit there were times at the olympics I was feeding [now-2-year-old son Boomer Robert] in the stands.”

Mila Kunis & Kristen Bell

Bell didn’t realize she was being projected onto a big screen while pumping during a table read for Bad Moms. “As we’re reading the script, you see [Kristen’s] face just getting closer and closer to the screen, and the rest of her body just keeps getting out of the screen,” costar Kunis recalled to Ellen DeGeneres. That’s when everyone in the room heard the noise — blasted over a loud speaker — of Bell pumping. “I’m sorry. When you gotta do it, you gotta do it,” said an unapologetic Bell, adding that she didn’t think it would be loud.

Kunis gets it: in a 2016 interview with Glamour, she shared, “I’ve pumped in an airport, I’ve pumped on the side of the road, I’ve pumped everywhere.”

Brooklyn Decker

Not long after the arrival of her first child with husband Andy Roddick, son Hank, Decker had to travel, and used an airplane maintenance issue as a chance to deplane and pump in (ugh) a bathroom.

But when she returned to the gate 15 minutes later, she was told the flight was closed and she wouldn’t be able to reboard to fly home to her son. She chronicled the saga on Twitter, glass of wine in hand.

Always one for keeping it real in new parenthood, Mollen used Instagram to share a few snaps of herself using a double breast pump in an airplane bathroom not long after the arrival of her second son, Lazlo, with husband Jason Biggs. “Remember that Kelis song, ‘My milkshake brings all the boys to the lavatory’?” she joked in the caption of a mirror selfie, sharing more photos of the process to her Instagram Story.

Scarlett Johansson

Another mom who pumped at the Oscars, ScarJo brought her gear with her when she presented at the 2015 show. But a mix-up in cars resulted in her pump (and milk) going home with the wrong guests — though thankfully responsible ones.

“Somehow, Mark [Consuelos] got ahold of my breast pump — in a bag with all the milk, ice packs in there,” she told Marie Claire. “Our cars got separated. Apparently, Kelly [Ripa] looked over, and she was like, ‘Wait a minute — is that Scarlett’s breast pump? We’ve got to get it back!’ because she knew how panicked I would be.”

Ginger Zee

“Women will say — I travel and breastfeed — ‘Well, how are you going to do that?’ ” she told reporters. “A lot of people do it! [Val’s] just gotten used to it. And it’s just a part of life. You walk in, you start pumping and get it out, and then I’m ready to practice!”

Annaleigh Ashford

While starring on Broadway in Sunday in the Park with George with Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashford found herself having to get very personal with her costar — they shared a dressing room.

“Poor Jake has had to deal with all my weird breastfeeding pump parts,” the actress, mom to son Jack with husband Joe Tapper, told PEOPLE. “Isn’t that glamorous? Broadway is really intimate. We’ve crossed over to a special place in our friendship.”

“His sister [Maggie] came backstage to talk to me after the opening night,” Ashford continued. “And she came in and I was breast pumping and I said, ‘Oh, come in — you’ve had two babies!’ “

“So that wasn’t fun,” she shared of filming the pilot two months after welcoming son Hayes. “But I’d bring [him] to the set, and he’d be with me in the trailer. He’s so sweet.”
