As the Woolsey fire raged through southern California, Busy Philipps struggled to find an “age-appropriate” way to explain the ordeal to her daughters, Birdie and Cricket.
“It’s difficult and Birdie, my 10-year-old, is a critical thinker and she is very intelligent and an aware child,” Philipps, 39, told Us Weekly and other reporters at the Baby2Baby Gala in Culver City, California, on Saturday, November 10, presented by Paul Mitchell and designed by Oren Co. “But you do want to make sure that you’re age-appropriate with your kids, because I don’t want to cause any more anxiety in her than she already has.”
The Busy Tonight host decided to turn the situation into a teaching moment. “Especially with the fires, we talked today about climate change and we talked about what that means and how we can make better steps in our family to do our part to help climate change,” she explained to Us. “Not everything is a learning moment, but some things are with kids.”
Philipps, who told Us she doesn’t “know one person in Los Angeles who is not affected” by the deadly Woolsey fire that caused more than 200,000 homes to evacuate in cities including Malibu, Oak Park, Calabasas and more, supported Baby2Baby on Saturday in a major way to help them raise funds for families in need.
The Dawson’s Creek alum and Julie Bowen hosted a live auction during the star-studded event, with Philipps herself donating $10,000. Celebrity stylist Jen Atkin and Rachel Zoe made the same contribution, helping Baby2Baby raise more than $4.3 million dollars to help them reach their goals for 2019.
Guests at the gala were treated to an array of delectable bites from Los Angeles’ top restaurants, including spaghetti squash from Craig’s and pasta from Jon and Vinny’s, before the Giving Tree Award honoree Amy Adams took the stage to voice her admiration for Baby2Baby.
