‘Big Bang’ star Mayim Bialik has ‘most secure job in the universe’ now: stay-at-home mom

Whether at the grocery store, the synagogue or the gym, Mayim Bialik said fans keep asking her the same question: “What are you doing after ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ “

Her answer?

Since the long-running CBS comedy aired its series finale in May, Bialik said she’s returned to the most important day-job of her life: being a stay-at-home mom.

Bialik described reprising her role as a full-time mom after the “Big Bang Theory” as well as the challenges of being a parent to older children in a YouTube video posted Thursday.

The last time Bialik was a stay-at-home mom was before she joined the CBS series in 2010, when her two sons were 18-months-old and three-years-old, she said. Now, they’re 10 and 13.

“You know the Rip Van Winkle story where the guy falls asleep and he wakes up, like, a million years later and his life is totally different?” she said. “That’s kind of what it feels like right now.”

Older kids, different needs

Bialik, 43, said though her house is quieter and her children are more mature, the biggest difference has been her sons no longer rely on her for everything.

“Another amazing and profound thing about being a stay-at-home mom again is the realization that they don’t need me the same way anymore,” she said. “This has been kind of rough.”

Bialik remembers the days when she had to be a super-mom to her toddlers. Now, she said she’s adjusting to her role as a parent to older boys.

“This is new for me. I’m used to being the attentive, present mom. I’m used to whipping out carrot sticks like they’re a six shooter,” she said. “I’m used to putting Band-Aids on boo boos. I’m used to nursing away hunger and pain and fear… Like, I’m used to being the most important person in their lives. Now I’m a presence in a new way.”

Though this new stage of parenting has its own challenges, Bialik said some things haven’t changed.

“I still try to sing the Shema to them, and I remember that I used to watch their eyes shift from blinking to heavy lids to closing and fluttering to closing completely for the night, when I used to pray for their souls to be watched over as they slept,” she said. “And now, they kind of just go to sleep.”

Bialik added there are still moments when her boys need their mom to promise everything will be OK.

“I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I cherish their nightmares, because it’s in those moments when they call out for me and I stumble out of my bed and I go to their room and I say, ‘I’m coming baby. I’m right here. Momma’s here. It’s gonna be OK,’ ” she said “I cherish that, still.”

‘I don’t feel unemployed’

While she misses the days of parenting small children, Bialik said she looks forward to this new stage of her children’s lives.

“So, in different ways, I learn to make it okay now,” she said. “I miss the tenderness of being a mom to an 18-month-old and three-year-old. I do. But now I get to be a partner with them in a whole new way. And I’m not their friend, but our relationship is much more sophisticated and mature now.”

Bialik ended her video telling fans, no, she isn’t unemployed after “The Big Bang Theory.” Actually, she’s found a role more lasting than any series regular.

“In this way, I don’t feel unemployed,” she said. “I feel like I am back to having the most secure job in the universe. Why is it the most secure job? Because it is the job I will have for the rest of my life, no matter what. I will always be their mom.”
