Mattel is releasing the first, collectible Day of the Dead Barbie.

Dia de los Muertos Barbie will be available from Amazon.com, Target and Walmart starting Sept. 12, a Mattel spokesperson confirmed in an email to USA TODAY.

The doll honors the holiday that runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 by wearing an elaborate headpiece adorned with monarch butterflies and bright marigold and a velvety, floor-length, ruffled black grown embellished with heart, butterfly and flower details. Her delicate face is painted in a traditional skull mask, which represents a deceased loved one or an expression of herself.

The doll will retail for $75.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a 3,000-year-old ritual, started by the Aztecs that spread north from Mexico into the states. It is marked with festivals, cemetery visitation and vibrant skull face painting.

It has even gone Hollywood: Daniel Craig’s James Bond pursues a bad guy through Mexico City during a huge Day of the Dead carnival in 2015’s “Spectre,” and Disney’s 2017 “Coco” unfolds on the eve of Dia de los Muertos.

This summer, Mattel paid homage to history by releasing Barbie dolls of civil rights activist Rosa Parks and astronaut Sally Ride. The collector dolls, which retail for $30.99 apiece, went on sale in August.

In July, the toymaker issued a limited-edition David Bowie doll. The doll is dressed as Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust, sporting a shiny, striped jumpsuit, bold makeup and fiery red hair. The adult collector’s item sells for $50.
