Anderson Cooper Surprises Fans With His Plan to Co-parent His Son With…His Ex

You know, these days, not much can surprise us about celebrity exes. Because Hollywood breakups honestly run the gamut as much as Normal People breakups do. Whether co-parenting exes are happily quarantining together like Ava Amurri and Kyle Martino, or are at each other’s throats with legal accusations amid a custody battle like Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler, we never know what to expect when an iconic couple splits — so we’ve learned to expect the unexpected. But Anderson Cooper’s recent reveal that he plans to co-parent his brand-new baby with his ex-boyfriend, Benjamin Maisani, is a new one — even for seasoned celebreaders like ourselves.

I want to share with you some joyful news. On Monday, I became a father. This is Wyatt Cooper. He is three days old. He is named after my father, who died when I was ten. I hope I can be as good a dad as he was. My son's middle name is Morgan. It's a family name on my mom's side. I know my mom and dad liked the name morgan because I recently found a list they made 52 years ago when they were trying to think of names for me. Wyatt Morgan Cooper. My son. He was 7.2 lbs at birth, and he is sweet, and soft, and healthy and I am beyond happy. As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son's birth. Most of all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing – what she, and all surrogates give to families who cant have children. My surrogate has a beautiful family of her own, a wonderfully supportive husband, and kids, and I am incredibly thankful for all the support they have given Wyatt and me. My family is blessed to have this family in our lives I do wish my mom and dad and my brother, Carter, were alive to meet Wyatt, but I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing, happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt, and that our family continues.

Cooper announced on Instagram that his son, Wyatt Morgan Cooper, was born Monday, April 27. “I want to share with you some joyful news,” Cooper wrote in his post.

Then, during Cooper’s appearance (virtually, of course) on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this week, he told Colbert that Maisani is “going to be a co-parent to Wyatt even though we’re not together anymore… He’s my family, and I want him to be Wyatt’s family as well.” Maisani was also in the delivery room (alongside Cooper’s surrogate and her husband) during Wyatt’s birth last week, so he’s literally been in Wyatt’s life since the very beginning, despite the fact that he and Cooper split in 2018.

Color us impressed at this celeb ex-couple finding ways to continue the family status they once worked hard to achieve — and to use it to add yet more loving adults into the life of a child.

And speaking of loving adults, apparently little Wyatt is already getting hand-me-downs from Andy Cohen’s 15-month-old kid, Benjamin Allen, who was also born via surrogate. And that includes a bonus, um, human “hand-me-down” in the form of Benjamin’s nanny?

“I’ve been talking about my nanny [saying] she’s leaving, that she’s gonna go help out a friend,” Cohen said on his SiriusXM Radio Andy show this week. “And the moment Anderson announced it I got a bunch of DMs from eagle-eared Radio Andy listeners saying, ‘Wait … is that where your nanny went?’ The answer is yes, that is where my nanny went.”

Aw! We are so stoked for little Wyatt — he’s got one hell of a cool village raising him already. And it’s only been one week.
