Is there such thing as too much of a good thing? That’s the question that has me scratching my head after hearing news that in summer 2020, a new television station helmed by Chip and Joanna Gaines will replace the Discovery Network’s DIY Channel.
Don’t get me wrong – I’ve seen every episode of Fixer Upper at least twice, and I’ve been known to pick up a copy of Magnolia Journal for inspiration when I’m at the store.
But does this mean that we’ll no longer get seemingly multiple day long marathons of miscellaneous Tiny House programming? And what about binge-watching First Time Flippers, The Vanilla Ice Project, and Building Alaska? MY FAMILY NEEDS TO KNOW.
So far, information on the programming that will appear on the network is sparse. According to a statement by Discovery, Inc. and Magnolia (the Gainses brand), the new channel will host a variety of programs that focus on “community, home, garden, food, wellness, entrepreneurialism, and design.” Honestly, it sounds more like Oprah’s OWN network, which has a rich variety of programming, than it does a straightforward home renovation channel like HGTV.
You’ll also, of course, be able to watch Fixer Upper reruns on the channel.
Apparently, fans of the new network will be able to watch their favorite shows through the TV Everywhere app, and there will also be a subscription streaming service specifically tied to the network that will be available down the line.
I’m excited to see what they come up with, even though it will be sad to see old favorites go. Discovery, Inc. also owns HGTV, so hopefully some of the classic shows will get picked up there – while I’m eager to see what awesome new stuff the Gainses come up with, it’ll be a cold day in hell when I give up my marathons of Salvage Dawgs.
