Low maintenance garden plants perfect for a sunny garden

Gardening tips: Expert on how to grow lavender at home

It can be daunting when it comes to planting new flowers and shrubs into the garden, as it requires lots of research to make sure they’re receiving the correct care.

If you have an area of your garden which gets full sun, or your whole garden gets full sun all day, here are some plants to consider planting.

Lavender

Lavenders demand full sun, and can be grown in borders and containers, living for many years with the correct care.

They will appreciate some shelter during the hottest weather of the year, and love to be kept moist during the growing season.

They will not survive long in shady, damp or extremely cold conditions, so make sure their requirements will be met before purchasing this plant.

Rosemary

Similarly to lavender, rosemary is a drought-tolerant plant with a great strong scent, ideal for containers or border growing.

Originally from Mediterranean climates, rosemary is hardy through most of the UK, tolerating temperatures down to -10C, according to the experts at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

It may need some winter protection in colder areas of the UK or frost-prone sites but it can generally be left alone.

Pruned annually, rosemary is a great plant for anywhere where space is tight, such as a small sunny courtyard, patios and containers.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are striking plants which can grow tall in the garden, providing shade for other plants or making a statement.

They should be grown in a moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and will flower best in a long, hot summer.

Annual sunflowers need plenty of water as well as feeding with a tomato feed just before flowering.

Very tall varieties may need the support of a garden cane, especially when grown in an exposed area of the garden.

Peony

Gardeners should try to plant peonies in full sun and a fertile soil, which has been improved by digging in garden compost for the best flowers.

While they will survive in partial shade, they will be much happier and have more flowers if given eight or more hours of sunlight per day.

They should also be given support if they are varieties with large flowers to help them stand upright.
