Lawn care expert shares how often to mow lawns in summer for ‘healthy’ grass

This Morning: ‘UK’s best lawn-fluencer’ shares his best mowing tips

There’s nothing better than a pristine, green lawn in the summer months. One of the best ways to achieve a beautiful, neat lawn is to mow and feed it regularly.

However, while it’s tempting to mow lawns during hot weather, this shouldn’t be done unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Three gardening experts exclusively told Express.co.uk how often to mow lawns and how to ensure there’s a “thick and healthy” covering throughout the summer.

Peter Chaloner, managing director of Cobra said gardeners should “avoid mowing” during hot weather and should take a “little and often approach” at this time of year.

He explained: “When it comes to mowing, it’s best to take a little and often approach, keeping grass around an inch tall.

“We also recommend avoiding mowing during hot periods as longer grass and provide shade for the soil, avoiding water evaporation.

“Another tip is to keep the cuttings. Sprinkling a light layer of cuttings onto the lawn can act as a mulch that locks in any moisture and nutrients, helping to grow thick, healthy grass.

“Mulching mowers are a fantastic way to do this as they not only mow the lawn, but instead of collecting up the cuttings, cuts them into tiny pieces and automatically returns them to the grass.”

Leaving clippings on the lawn also gives grass more nutrients. As the cuttings decompose, they release up to 30 percent of a lawn’s required nutrients.

However, clippings should only be left on lawns in the middle of the growing season. They need to be removed at the beginning and end of the season as they won’t decompose as quickly.

Jamie Shipley, a gardening expert and managing director of Hedges Direct told Express.co.uk that lawns need mowing once or twice a week in summer.

He said: “To ensure thick and healthy covering throughout the summer, mow your grass once or twice a week while growth is active.

“Avoid over-cutting, especially when the grass is dry, as this may result in damage.”

Luke Bartle, head gardener at the famed Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire agreed.

He said: “During periods of prolonged dry weather, reduce mowing the grass to reduce stress on the grass.”
