While temperatures may be cooler and the weather wetter, there’s still plenty to be done in the garden in November.
David Mitchell, a buying manager for garden and seasonal at Homebase has shared which four tasks gardeners can do this month.
He said: “We are in the thick of autumn now, but it’s not time to say goodbye to our gardens yet.”
Last-minute lawn care
Just because it’s raining and cold, doesn’t mean it’s time to put your lawn to bed for winter.
David explained: “Firstly, you’ve got to keep it tidy and rake those leaves, this will prevent rotting and give it plenty of light and air to survive the frost.

“Next, it’s time to sow some lawn seed, it germinates brilliantly in autumn and will give the roots time to establish before it gets too cold.”
Protect your plants and prepare for spring
Not every plant can survive the winter by itself so they need a helping hand, especially tender plants.
David explained: “Try putting your more tender plants in a sheltered corner, a bit more protected from the wind and rain, or we recommend using a horticultural fleece which still allows light and water through.

“Another top trick is to wrap bubble wrap around your pots, keeping them insulated and safe if they get knocked over too.
“It’s also the perfect time to plant those tulips and sweet peas for a beautiful display of colour in spring next year, giving you something to look forward to.”
Feed garden visitors
In autumn and winter, food can be scarce for birds. To give them a helping hand, pop some high-fat snacks out in the garden along with some fresh water.

Add lighting to the garden
David said: “It’s already the time of year when we complain it’s getting darker earlier, so make sure you install some security lighting at the front of your property, and in the garden too.
“Looking to save on electricity? Then try motion sensors, that way they’ll only switch on when you need them most.”
