Gardening expert on how to keep your garden free of weeds
Although summer is over, gardeners may be surprised to hear that most garden weeds continue to grow at a fairly rapid rate throughout autumn.
It is only when winter hits that gardeners will be free of the task of weeding their gardens.
However, to stop the growth of weeds now, they can use certain plants, otherwise known as ground cover plants.
Ground cover plants are attractive plants that naturally choke out weeds. They work by covering the ground and not leaving any space for weeds to grow.
This method works particularly well for those weeds that are well-established not just those that have freshly sprouted.

Taking to the Gardening UK Facebook page, one woman asked what she should be planting to get the weeds in her garden under control.
Sandra Baker wrote: “I’m hoping for some really good advice. I would like to know what plants are best for keeping weeds under control.
“We’re trying to clear our garden but I want to put in some nice borders.”
Group members in the comments were all in agreement with one particular plant that should be used as ground cover.

They claimed that hardy geraniums are the variety to choose from if gardeners want a plant that will “suffocate weeds”.
Melanie Wootton said: “Ground cover helps crowd them out, reduces soil space for weeds to settle and establish. I love hardy geranium. So easy. Snip it back and it leafs up and reflowers.”
Janice Crandon commented: “There are weeds and weeds! Some vigorous perennial weeds such as bramble, bindweed and nettles are best thoroughly eradicated before you permanently plant up a border.
“You can, however, use vigorous ground cover plants such as hardy geraniums to prevent a lot of annual weeds growing.
“Geraniums will suffocate the weeds and stop more being produced.”
Steven Mason claimed: “Ground cover plants like geraniums look beautiful, but also put an end to the most stubborn of weeds.”
According to the gardening experts at Hayloft Plants, geraniums provide a “natural solution” in borders for “ridding the weeds in abundance”.
They also claimed that this type of plant is “ridiculously easy to grow”, and works well in any garden soil type.
