High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But you could slash your chances of developing hypertension by avoiding intense exercises, it’s been claimed.
High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.
The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.
It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.
One of the easiest ways to avoid hypertension is to change your workout routine.

Some types of exercise aren’t as helpful at reducing your blood pressure.
Any workout that has periods of very intense exercise can be dangerous for people with hypertension, according to charity Blood Pressure UK.
Sprinting, weightlifting and squash are all types of these exercises.
Intense bursts of activity put extra stress on your heart, which subsequently impacts your blood vessels and blood pressure.

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” it said.
“If you have high blood pressure, focus on aerobic activities as these will help your heart and blood vessels most, but avoid activities which put too much strain on your heart.
“Some forms of activity are less helpful. For example, any exercise that is very intensive for short periods of time, such as sprinting or weightlifting.
“They raise your blood pressure very quickly and put too much strain on your heart and blood vessels.”
Aerobic exercises are the best forms of activity for people with high blood pressure, it added.
These types of workout use all of the body’s core muscle groups, including the legs, arms and shoulders.
They include rhythmic exercises that improve the health of the lungs, heart and blood vessels.
The best types of aerobic exercise include brisk walking, jogging, dancing, or even heavy gardening.
High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.
The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.
It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
