Stomach bloating typically describes what happens when too much gas fills up the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. With no exit for expulsion, the tummy tends to stretch and swell. This may result in painful cramps that last for hours, diminishing a person’s overall quality of life. The symptoms of bloating can be similar to another serious condition though.

Lymph nodes help the body’s immune system fight infections.

Lymphadenitis is a condition in which the lymph nodes become inflamed.

When the condition affects the lymph nodes in the membrane that connects the bowel to the abdominal wall it’s called mesenteric lymphadenitis.

A viral intestinal infection is the usual cause of mesenteric lymphadenitis, also known as mesenteric adenitis. It mainly affects children and teens.

This painful condition can mimic appendicitis or a condition in which part of the intestine slides into another part of the intestine.

Its easy to understand when a person suffers symptoms with swollen lymph nodes or lymphadenitis, they may just pass it off as a case of a serious bloat.

Symptoms of lymphadenitis similar to bloating can include:

Abdominal pain, often centred on the lower right side, but the pain can be more widespread

General abdominal tenderness.

Stomach pain may be localised near the belly button, to the lower, right side, or possibly widespread, said Medical News Today.

The health site added: “Sometimes, a sore throat or symptoms of a cold may occur before the pain starts.

“An upper respiratory infection can also develop.

“Mesenteric adenitis is normally mild, and it only lasts a few days. In most cases, the problem will resolve without intervention.

“However, medical help should be sought if the pain gets worse, or if there is a sudden severe stomach pain, stomach pain with fever, or stomach pain with diarrhoea or vomiting.”

According to MedicineNet, causes of swollen lymph nodes (glands) may include infection (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasites).

Symptoms of swollen glands can vary and may include fever, night sweats, toothache, sore throat, or weight loss.

Causes of swollen lymph nodes also vary, but may include cancer, the common cold, mono, chickenpox, HIV, or herpes.

Treatment for condition will depend on the cause.

How to get rid

Experts advise natural home remedies to help both symptoms of bloating and mesenteric lymphadenitis which include:

Echinacea: A herb that is derived from the echinacea   plant and is used to help fight infections. The herb can boost the immune system and remove the toxins that cause infection. This can help speed up the healing process.

Wild indigo: This supplement is known for its infection-fighting properties, but it must be used with echinacea, or it may be toxic. Used correctly, it can cleanse the immune system and helps to fight disease.

Liquorice: Used to treat a variety of infections because it is anti-inflammatory and enhances mucosal protection. It can also help with mesenteric adenitis by loading the intestinal tract with healthy bacteria.
