Pollen count forecast for today – what is the best hay fever treatment?

Pollen count is based on the measurement of the number of grains of pollen in a cubic meter of the air. The higher the count, the greater the chance that people suffering from hay fever will experience symptoms when they are outdoors or exposed to outdoor air. The Met Office have forecasted high levels of pollen for most parts of England. Mild to low levels of pollen have been forecasted for areas in North England and Scotland.

Nearly 18 million people in the UK suffer with hay fever according to charity, Allergy UK.

Hay fever is an underestimated condition and it often thought of by non-sufferers as just a sniffy nose or a nuisance caused by sneezing.

In fact, it can be an extremely debilitating disorder for many suffered and could have a huge impact on their daily lives.

Grass pollen season runs from late May to early August and 95 per cent of suffers are affected by the grass pollen during this season.

Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, can include symptoms such as sneezing, itching and runny nose. The eyes may be affected, with itching, redness and watering.

Hay fever can also cause a blocked or stuffy nose, which may lead to headaches and difficulty sleeping.

It can also aggravate symptoms of allergies making it difficult to breath fro those suffered who also have hay fever.

Leading national patient charity, Allergy UK, reported in a 2016 survey that 80 per cent of respondents said that HayMax worked and almost eight out of ten respondents said the balm helped some or all of their hay fever symptoms.

In a report by The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, HayMax was independently researched and found that there was a reduction to the amount of allergies entering the nose by using HayMax.

It was reported that HayMax traps over one third of the pollen before it gets in the body.

Professor Jean Emerlin said: “The study aimed to assess the number of pollen grains that are trapped by HayMax balm when applied in a standard manner to the rim and the inside of nostrils compared with the amount deposited on uncoated nostrils.

“The study used adult volunteers and was conducted on six days during the peak pollen season in 2009.
