One in eight lung cancer sufferers have the mutation, which earned its Star Wars-inspired moniker due to its spherical appearance and impenetrable nature. Trials showed the drug sotorasib, taken at home as a tablet, can prevent tumours growing for around seven months.
Patients in England were the first in Europe to access it in September as part of a limited trial.
It has now been approved to move into the Cancer Drugs Fund after a confidential discount was agreed, guaranteeing access for up to 1,200 patients over the next two years.
NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said it is the latest in “a long list of cutting-edge therapies for patients, at a price that’s affordable for the taxpayer”.
