The 51-year-old Countryfile star has been sharing her breast cancer battle with fans via social media. Having recently undergone a mastectomy she recently revealed she’s been experiencing “ups and downs”. On Friday 5 November she posted to Instagram: You know what…yesterday wasn’t such a good day.

“Processing everything that’s happened & what the future holds sometimes is a bit much.”

She continued: “I was told I’d have ups & downs but my focus has been on healing and accepting all the love & support, so I’ve largely been occupied with that.

“Yesterday it all took over. And that’s OK.”

Her parting message with fans read: “To everyone on the same path as I am..I can only say today I feel better & I’m telling myself positive things.

“‘Everything I need is here right now. I’m loved & I’m OK’.

“I’m sharing this because people have told me it helps them to see someone else going through the trials & tribulations of a cancer diagnosis.

“Sadly 1 in 2 of us will get a diagnosis in our lifetime.”

Julia announced her breast cancer diagnosis in September this year and detailed she’d need a mastectomy later in the year.

She said she found a lump last year which turned out to be a cluster of benign micro-cysts.

But her cancer diagnosis came after she booked in for a mammogram in July on an annual recall.

While the tumour has been described as “sizeable”, doctors believe the cancer cells have not yet spread to the breast tissue, which means she may not need chemotherapy.

At the same time as announcing her diagnosis, Julia urged other women to regularly check themselves for breast cancer and not to be afraid to seek help.

She Tweeted at the time: “Please self-check regularly & if you have any unexplained pain, tenderness or lumps, please ask for checks & follow ups.

“And ask for a 2nd opinion if you’re not happy.”

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK.

Several symptoms are associated with the disease, but the first noticeable symptom is usually a lump or area of thickened breast tissue.

While most breast lumps are not cancerous, it’s always best to have them checked by a doctor.

The NHS says you should see a GP if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts
  • discharge from either of your nipples, which may be streaked with blood
  • a lump or swelling in either of your armpits
  • dimpling on the skin of your breasts
  • a rash on or around your nipple
  • a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast

Breast pain is not usually a symptom of breast cancer.
