High cholesterol: Lump underneath the skin is a warning your levels are too high

High cholesterol levels are troublesome as it means there is too much ‘bad’ cholesterol floating in the blood, which can result in serious complications. The condition does not have any obvious symptoms in the early stages meaning many are unaware until it is too late. Having high levels of cholesterol may cause this skin condition.

Eruptive xanthomatosis is a rare skin condition caused by excessively high lipids in the blood.

It can occur in people with poorly controlled high blood sugar levels and those who have very high triglycerides and high cholesterol. 

Cholesterol and triglycerides are types of fats that naturally occur in your blood.

High levels increase the risk for heart disease and other health problems.

Eruptive xanthomatosis causes small harmless bumps, also known as eruptive xanthomas, on the skin, said Healthline.

The site continued: “These bumps are sometimes referred to as lesions, papules, plaques, or a rash.

“This rare skin condition happens when you have too much fat or cholesterol in your blood.

“The bumps are filled with fat.

“About 10 percent of people with high fat levels in their blood will get eruptive xanthomatosis.

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, eruptive xanthomas were investigated.

The study noted: “Xanthomas are localized lipid deposits in the skin, tendons and subcutaneous tissue associated with lipid abnormality. 

“They are a result of lipoproteins passing through the blood vessel wall into the subendothelial layer, where the lipoproteins are picked up by macrophages.

“Depending on the types of metabolic disorders, the exanthem may include triglycerides or cholesterol esters.

“People with normal cholesterol and triglycerides level in blood serum may also have the described cutaneous lesions.” 

Eruptive xanthomatosis causes groups of round little bumps.

They’re usually found on the back of your arms including the elbows and on the back of your thighs, buttocks, and legs.

Other areas they can be found on include:

  • Stomach
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Knees
  • Face
  • Scalp

The American Heart Association recommends having your cholesterol levels checked every four to six years if you are a healthy adult over the age of 20.

If you have a family history of high cholesterol, it’s recommended to have it checked more often.

A person may also need more frequent cholesterol checks if they have a family history of heart attacks or strokes.

As high cholesterol does not cause any major symptoms in the early stages, it’s integral for one to make good lifestyle choices by eating a healthy diet, maintaining an exercise routine and regularly monitoring cholesterol levels.
