Easy-to-find vitamin supplement shown to improve symptoms of eczema

It’s National Eczema Week where those who suffer with the skin condition raise awareness for it.

Eczema comes in several forms but the most common is atopic dermatitis.

It’s common in children, but can carry on into adulthood which causes dry, itchy and painful skin.

Eczema can cause lots of problems, from discomfort to embarrassment and self-consciousness.

There’s also a risk of skin infections when dry areas crack.

Unfortunately, as of yet, there is no cure for the disease.

Most people treat it with a combination of steroid creams, emollients, antihistamines and possibly light therapy.

However, evidence now shows that vitamin D could help to alleviate symptoms, reports the Express.

While we naturally absorb vitamin D from the sun, it’s not safe to perpetually sunbathe as this can cause cancer.

Vitamin D rich foods are another good source as well as supplements.

Two different studies have found that using a vitamin D supplement of 1600 IU for 60 days lead to an improvement in atopic dermatitis severity scores compared with a placebo.

Vitamin D plays an important role in skin barrier function and cell growth.

Plus, it maintains the immune system.

Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D in the blood are associated with eczema and psoriasis.

Plus, one study showed that people with low vitamin D had lower average skin moisture than those with normal levels.

As blood levels of vitamin D rose in the study, so did skin moisture.

People with eczema often have dry skin because their skin cannot retain moisture well.

This dryness increases itchiness and can cause reactions.

Another small study of 50 women showed that taking 600 IU of vitamin D lead to improvements in skin hydration.

So, if you suffer from dry patches of eczema, you should consider picking up some vitamin D tablets.

If you are suffering with your eczema, don’t hesitate to see your GP and ask for help.
