Denise Richards is thanking some eagle-eyed fans who tuned into the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion show after they pointed out to her that her thryoid looked enlarged.
She shared on her Instagram that she received messages from fans pointing out the potential issue, and that she made a few immediate changes to address it.
“A few of you pointed out after the #RHOBH reunion that my thyroid was enlarged. You were right, it was something I ignored until pointed out,” she wrote in her caption.
Denise didn’t disclose an exact diagnosis regarding her enlarged thyroid, but one in eight women will develop a thyroid disorder in her lifetime, per the American Thyroid Association, so she’s certainly not alone.
It’s amazing to me in a short time eliminating gluten from my diet how much my thyroid has changed. A few of you pointed out after the #RHOBH reunion that my thyroid was enlarged. You were right, it was something I ignored until pointed out. I had no idea how much our diet really can affect our body and for me how toxic gluten really is … I thank all of you who sent me messages. #selfcare

Denise also shared in her post that she decided to try treating the issue with a gluten-free diet—and that it seemed to be working. When one fan asked her how long it took before she started to notice a change, Denise responded, “right away actually I was quite surprised I’m a pasta and bread basket girl😂”.
But, wait—will going gluten-free really help resolve your thyroid issues? Not so much. Despite plenty of internet chatter indicating that a gluten-free diet may help treat hypothyrodism (an underactive thyroid), there isn’t much evidence indicating that’s the case, per Scientific American. So maybe don’t try it just yet. According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment for an underactive thyroid usually involves daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine.
Still, it’s great to hear that Denise is feeling better!
