COVID daily cases rise above 6,000 in the UK – coronavirus symptoms you should know

COVID-19 is an infectious disease that has been confirmed in more than 30 million people across the world. Latest daily figures in the UK have revealed a major spike in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

The UK has seen a steady rise in the number of coronavirus cases over the past few weeks.

Almost 10 million people across the country have been put into local lockdowns, in a bid to stop the rising spread of the infection.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has now ordered all pubs and restaurants to shut at 10pm, while nobody should meet with more than five other people for the foreseeable future.

After the latest restrictions were announced on Tuesday, the overnight coronavirus cases in the UK have sharply risen.

There were 6,178 new cases of COVID-19 in the UK overnight, Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed.

That compares to 4,926 in the previous 24 hours; which was, at the time, the highest since the middle of May.

But the latest daily figures have hit a grim milestone for the UK’s second wave of COVID-19.

It’s the highest daily total since May 1, and there have only been two other days since the pandemic started that saw more cases in a single day.

“6178 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported overnight, compared to 4,926 overnight cases reported yesterday,” said PHE’s Medical Director, Yvonne Doyle.

“New measures have been bought in to stop the spread of the virus and it is essential that you follow them.

“You should work from home if you can, must now wear a face covering in retail and hospitality settings, unless you are eating or drinking and not be in a group larger than six people.

“We are testing much more than we were earlier on in the outbreak and our local Health Protection teams are working with local councils and Directors of Public Health to manage the increase.”

A further 37 people have died from the virus overnight, as the UK’s total death toll nears 42,000.

To limit the spread of the virus, it’s crucial that you get tested for COVID-19 as soon as you develop symptoms.

In the UK, you’re eligible for a free coronavirus test if you develop any of the most common signs.

A high fever, a new cough, or a loss of sense of smell or taste could all be COVID-19 symptoms.

Most people have at least one of these three symptoms if they have coronavirus, said the NHS.

But there are a number of other symptoms that could also be a sign of infection, scientists have warned.

Some patients have reported diarrhoea, a sore throat, headaches, hiccups, and even an unusual rash.

More than 400,000 people tested positive for coronavirus in the UK.
