Chris Evans 'Used to Love Weed'—But Now He's 'Chilled Out' on It

Chris Evans “used to love weed,” but said in a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he no longer smokes as regularly as he used to, claiming it “zaps” his energy.

“I’ve chilled out on weed,” Evans told the outlet in a cover story published Wednesday. “I used to love it, but now I think it’s the one thing that gets in my way. It zaps your motivation.”

The comments came just ahead of the release of Avengers: Endgame, which the Captain America actor has suggested will be his last in the franchise. But, as he makes clear in the wide-ranging interview Wednesday, that doesn’t mean it’ll be his last film overall. “It’s a really obnoxious notion for an actor to say they’re going to retire,” Evans said, quashing rumors that he’s giving up acting. “It’s not something you retire from.”

His remarks about his relationship with recreational pot, which is legal in the actor’s home state of California, came as he reflected on his early days in the film industry.

“It’s exactly what you think it is,” Evans said. “A lot of young actors. A lack of parental supervision. A lot of, uh, debauchery. You make a lot of strange connections with a lot of thirsty people, but you kind of are one of the thirsty people, too. It was a great time. It really was. It’s like the L.A. welcoming committee. The same kids I met there are probably still kicking around, meeting the new batch of kids and showing them where to buy weed. You had to know that, back then. You couldn’t just walk into a store.”

Asked by writer Alex Pappademas if he walks into a store now to get pot, Evans suggested he no longer smokes—at least not as much as he used to.

“I think apathy kind of bleeds in, and you start to think, ‘Well, I’m not apathetic, I just don’t feel like doing that.’ And it’s like, no—you would feel like doing that if you weren’t stoned,” Evans said. “And, you know—I’m 37. I can’t be smoking weed all the time. That’s crazy.”

For a guy who claims to have had “motivation” problems in the past, Evans has had a prolific career—and has been particularly celebrated for his portrayal of Captain America in the wildly successful Avengers franchise.

Endgame, which will find his Captain America and his fellow heroes looking to defeat Thanos once and for all, is due out next month.
