As a celebrity fitness trainer (you may have heard of Carrie Underwood, perhaps?) and author of The 4 x 4 Diet, I’m always looking at how to improve my health.

One area that needed a tweak: my energy levels. (Even I have slumps sometimes!) So that’s why I was so excited to discover beet juice shots.

Seriously, hear me out: Two years ago, a client started talking up the energy-boosting benefits of taking beet juice shots. I decided to give them a go, and I was immediately hooked; there was just one problem: When you buy them at the store, they’re so pricey.

I knew I had to start looking for a juicer to use at home—specifically one with a wide chute to fit whole veggies (I’m lazy and didn’t want bother chopping everything up). That’s when I found the Oster JusSimple 5-Speed Juice Extractor.

Aside from being super-easy to use, it’s just as easy to clean—the filter on juicers can be a beast, but the one on this model barely needs any scrubbing (and the fewer dishes to scrub, the better, if you ask me).

It also has five different speed settings that you can use for juicing fruit or vegetables based on how hard they are (yes, really). And, as expensive as juicers can be—some can cost upwards of $300—this one is really well priced.

Sunday prep day, actually prep day for me is Monday but I ran out of my beet juice shots with lemon and ginger. I take 2, 3oz shots per day. 1 in the morning after breakfast (don’t do them on an empty stomach) and before I workout later in the afternoon but I still eat something before I take it. I like to keep these in the tiny mason jars so I just grab them out of the fridge and they’re already portioned out for me!! These shots changed my world as well as so many others who have messaged me. I posted a video of how to make it on Dec 26th, so go check it out! . . . #healthy #beetjuice #4x4diet #balance #fitness #healthyeating #healthylifestyle #fitlife #nashville #trainer

Back to the beet shots. I take my first three-ounce beet juice shot just after breakfast to kick my day off and my second one mid-afternoon an hour before my workout. (I told you I’m obsessed—I don’t even drink coffee anymore.)

Seriously, though, about the energy boost: Since starting the beet shots, I’ve dropped a full minute off my mile run time. Granted, I worked hard for that, too, but I’m sure the beet shots also had something to do with it. (Btw: Research also shows that beets may help improve exercise endurance—it’s not just me.) In fact, most of my clients (like Kasey Musgraves, for example) are taking beet juice shots now too, and they love them just as much as I do.

If you want to try out beet shots for yourself, here’s how I make mine:
