Cancer specialist shares seven signs of a growing tumour in the chest

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Lester Barr – the founder of charity Prevent Breast Cancer – is sharing the signs of disease that can affect men and women.

The first sign of a lump in the breast tissue, whether a man or woman, should be checked out by a doctor.

Barr recommended checking all of the breast tissue, including all the way up into your armpits.

Also pay attention to any swelling in the breast tissue, which is a “signpost that something isn’t right”.

Barr said: “Keep an eye on how your breasts look and feel, checking for swollen areas.”

Barr added: “Dimpling, puckering, pulling or inwardly depressed skin can all be signs that something is going on under the surface.

“It’s important to look at your breasts as well as feeling for lumps, and notice any changes to the skin’s appearance or tone.”

Nipple changes also require further investigation, which includes changes in:

  • Colour
  • Appearance
  • Inversion.

Any such changes should be “checked by a doctor as soon as you can”.

Barr said: “Sometimes breast cancer can cause your nipples to leak a bloody discharge.

“Tell your doctor if this happens, and he or she may refer you for more tests.”

Also be on the lookout for any skin irritation or texture changes, such as itching, redness, and dry skin.

“There are lots of different reasons why skin might itch or become irritated, but it’s important to rule out breast cancer,” said Barr.

Any breast tissue that is “hot to touch or red in colour should be checked by a GP”.

Seven signs of breast cancer

  1. A lump
  2. Swelling
  3. Dimpled or depressed skin
  4. Changes to nipple
  5. Bloody discharge
  6. Skin irritation or texture change.

Barr said: “Many signs and symptoms of breast cancer, including breast lumps, are non-cancerous.

“But it remains vital that you pay attention to your body and seek help if you notice anything that is abnormal for you.”

The sooner any type of cancer is detected, the better the chances of a full recovery.
