Iron is needed by the body to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to different parts of the body.

But, not getting enough iron in your diet could lead to a reduction in oxygen, and subsequently iron deficiency anaemia – which leaves patients feeling tired.

“Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are the best ways to maintain your natural energy levels,” Van De Walle wrote on medical website Healthline.

“Fortunately, there are many supplements you can turn to for an energy boost.

“Red blood cells require iron to transport oxygen to your body’s tissues.

“Without iron, oxygen delivery to the entire body is limited, which may result in extreme fatigue.

“A diet low in iron, excessive blood loss and pregnancy can increase iron needs.”

You could also lower your risk of tiredness and fatigue by regularly taking beetroot powder supplements, he said.

The powder contains high levels of nitrate, which produces nitric acid in the body. This relaxes blood vessels and increases oxygen delivery to different parts of the body.

If you’ve been feeling tired for more than four weeks, it’s a good idea to speak to a doctor, said the NHS.

Making sure you get enough sleep could help to prevent you from feeling sleepy the next day.
