The Aperol Spritz Is Here to Stay

Push that glass of rosé aside. This summer is all about the Aperol spritz. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying the orange-hued, bubbly cocktail has made waves in recent months. But we’ve done more than collectively talk about the seemingly divisive cocktail: Yelp has seen a massive increase in mentions of Aperol spritz on its website. So much so, Yelp has named Aperol spritz the most popular summer drink.

Yelp published two infographics, 2019’s Drinks of Summer and Your City’s Favorite Summer Drink. The former identifies this year’s trendiest summer cocktails, determined by the frequency with which the cocktails appear in Yelp reviews. At No. 1? The Aperol spritz. According to Yelp, mentions for the cocktail are up 94 percent compared to last year, and it’s most popular on the west coast, as well as Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

Coming in at No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively, are the spiked seltzer, Paloma and Negroni. The east coast is apparently all about the spiked seltzer, with Tampa Bay, Charlotte, Raleigh, Cleveland, Boston and Philadelphia all preferring a “healthier” cocktail in hand. Palomas are popular in cities in the midwest, including Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis, as well as in a few cities in Texas. Portland, San Francisco and Virginia Beach, on the other hand, are Negroni fans.

Though frosés may seem so last year, they’re still the “summeriest drink,” as Yelp puts it. Mentioned 117 percent more often in the summer than the rest of the year, frosés are a hit in Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas and Detroit, among others.
