Poppy O’Toole is a Michelin-trained chef and the self-appointed “potato queen”. She is also the author of the cookbook Poppy Cooks: The Food You Need. The chef has over three million followers online, with a whopping 2.7m of those coming from TikTok.
This is where one follower asked Poppy for help in mastering chopping one tricky kitchen staple, the onion.
Kellie Pooler asked Poppy: “Can you please show how to chop an onion properly? I just cannot get it.”
Cooking expert Poppy was more than happy to help, and responded with a video demonstration, telling the fan: “This will change your life! How to cut your onions like a pro.”
Home cooks take note, as Poppy described the method professionals use when chopping onions.
She said: “This is one of the first techniques you learn when becoming a chef.”
How to chop an onion like a pro, according to Poppy
“So,” Poppy said, “you want to get your onion. Chop the top off, cut it in half and then peel it.
“Through the middle, horizontally, you want to cut it about three times. Not going all the way through, you want to protect that root. Then about cut it five or size times down, vertically through, again not cutting the root.
“Then you want to turn your onion and start chopping it. You want to use your knuckle as a protector so as to not cut your fingers.
“Then you chop it just towards the root and there, you have a finely chopped onion.”

Cooking enthusiasts piled in with their questions. One asked: “Why have that horizontal cut? An onion is layered by itself, so the vertical cuts form the cubes already? What am I missing?”
Another seconded the sentiment, and wrote: “Am I the only one who questions the horizontal cuts? If you look at the layers of an onion, the cuts are not needed. Or am I wrong?”
Poppy herself responded: “The onion curves so you won’t get a squared shape, so horizontally cut for a more even cut throughout.”
Others thanked Poppy and said the hack has helped their cooking considerably.
