Make 'bacon' from carrots with this viral TikTok tutorial

Breakfast really isn’t the same without a couple of rashers of bacon, and many vegans and vegetarians say that the thing they miss most from the world of meat is those cured strips of heaven.

Vegan chef Tabitha Brown has come up with an incredible new recipe that might just fill that streaky hole for non-meat-eaters and those who’ve simply run out of bacon during lockdown. And, surprisingly, it uses carrots.

In a TikTok tutorial which has now racked up over 12 million views, Tabitha details how to make the ingenious substitute, and the best part is that it uses things you probably have in your pantry.

Tabitha, who’s from North Carolina in the US, starts off with a simple carrot and a potato peeler, making strips lengthways down the carrot.

The 41-year-old says: ”See how it looks real thin? Uh huh. Now you’ve got a few strips, but if you want more than this, then do that because that’s your business!’

We like how she thinks.

Then it’s time for the spices. Tabitha uses garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, and pepper all in a bowl with the shaved carrots.

As well as this, she pops in some maple syrup and liquid smoke, which creates that bacon-y flavour and can be bought in supermarkets or on sites like Amazon to be delivered to your door.

‘This is your concoction for the carrots that turns it into the bacon,’ she says while mixing up the seasonings with a pastry brush.

Once you pop the carrots in you leave them for a few minutes, and then it’s time to cook.

Tabitha cooks hers in an air fryer, but says you can do it in the oven if you don’t have one. Hers is set to 380F, which translates to around 195C.

In just five minutes, your carrots should have crisped right up with the crunch of bacon that you know and love.

In her video, Tabitha even shows viewers the snap she got on hers, saying: ‘Let’s check the crunch… Listen real good, yup!’

Safe to say, it looks – and sounds – delicious.

Tabitha’s video has now got 2.7 million likes and over 15,000 comments, with people from across the world amazed at how easy it was to make something so tasty.

That’s one way to do meat-free Mondays in style, anyway.
