The traditional jacket potato is one of the UK’s favourite and most versatile dishes, as most people have a favourite and unique variation. While the dish itself can come with a selection of potential toppings, most people will use the same cooking process.

How to cook a jacket potato in the oven

Classic jacket potatoes include a health dollop of sour cream, some bacon and spring onions.

According to BBC Good Food, cooking the potato takes roughly one hour and 20 minutes.

Jacket potato recipe

Ingredients

  • Four large baking potatoes
  • Two teaspoons of olive oil
  • 200ml of sour cream
  • 50g of grated cheddar
  • Four diced crispy bacon rashers
  • Four finely chopped spring onions

Method

Heat the oven to 220C or 200C with fan, and rub two teaspoons of olive oil over four large baking potatoes on top of the oven.

Bake the potatoes for 20 minutes before turning the oven down to 190C or 170C with the fan.

Once they have baked for another 45 minutes to an hour, people should cut a cross on top of each potato and squeeze the sides, adding the sour cream and any other favourite topping.
