Intermittent fasting gained traction as a weight loss tactic years ago. The diet resurfaces from time to time when a celebrity praises its benefits or a formerly overweight individual preaches their success.

Recently, medical specialists discovered a reason to believe intermittent fasting could help more than just the number on your scale: it may help people manage serious autoimmune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

These celebrities swear by intermittent fasting for various reasons, an eating pattern that has two states: the “fed” and the “fastest” states. Intermittent fasters try to increase their time between meals to encourage their bodies’ eating cycles to alternate between these two states throughout the day.

Benedict Cumberbatch used the ‘5:2’ diet to lose weight

Sherlock Holmes star Benedict Cumberbatch told The London Times how he had to take on the “5:2” diet to lose weight for his role in the film. The 5:2 diet allows you to eat anything you want (within reason) for five days of the week. The remaining two days are “fast days” where you eat about 25% of what you’d typically have (this is usually around 500 calories for women and 600 for men).

Studies uncovered the people on the 5:2 diet have a lower risk of heart disease and a faster metabolism than people who counted calories. The 5:2 Diet Book recommends eating vegetables, lean meats and fish, and soup, although technically you can eat whatever you’d like.

Metcalfe uses LighterLife Fast as a diet plan. It mimics the 5:2 diet and requires she only eats 500 to 600 calories a day two days a week with their products. “You’re not deprived and your energy levels are still up,” she told the Daily Mail of the brand. “to know my body is getting everything it needs, even to go to the gym, that makes me feel good.”

LighterLife Fast sends you four of their Total Diet Replacement Foodpacks to use on your two fasting days. It “means you’re getting your vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, essential fats, and carbs in around 600 calories,” the website states.

Chris Hemsworth told Jimmy Kimmel about his experience

Chris Hemsworth is well-known as Thor in the Marvel franchise, but when he isn’t playing the ridiculously strong superhero, he needs to find quick (and healthy) ways to slim down for other movies. Take In the Heart of the Sea, the 2013 adventure drama film that required Hemsworth to drop some 20 pounds of muscle he’d built up to play Thor, and then some extra.

Hemsworth told Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live how he ate somewhere around 600 calories on his fasting days. “You have like a fasting period of 15 hours, like you stop eating completely, and then you have little meals through the day.” Kimmel himself promotes intermittent fasting as a diet technique.

The talk show host lost 25 pounds in two ways. First, he replaced two meals per day with protein shakes, then he took on the 5:2 diet plan.

“It sounds hard, but you get used to it and learn you can get through it,” he said, “It’s helped me stay at 182 pounds. And it’s made me appreciate the food that I do eat.”

Experts recognize the major benefits of intermittent fasting

Dr. Kevin Gendreau lost an astounding 125 pounds with intermittent fasting. He followed a 12:8 plan, which restricts based on the hours of the day rather than the days of the week. Gendreau consumed a standard amount of calories from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. but fasted the rest of the day. The intermittent fasting helped him to lose the tricky last 50 plus pounds in his total 125-pound weight loss. It took a total of 18 months.
