Cheese on toast named best lockdown snack – but do you agree?

The coronavirus pandemic has changed so much of our lives.

Dating is different. Your weekly food shop now feels like a survival mission. Pub trips have been replaced by Zoom quizzes.

And when it comes to food, snacking is king.

Blame working from home, the strange way time seems to move in lockdown, or the overwhelming stress a pandemic brings, but grazing throughout the day seems to have become the norm ahead of the usual routine of three meals a day.

But which snacks in particular are taking our fancy in these troubled times?

Has the humble crisp surged in popularity? Are we living off sourdough and banana bread alone? How many packets of biscuits is it normal to get through a week?

According to one study, it’s none of these traditional treats that’s proving the most popular amid lockdown.

Instead, the ‘king of snacks’ is cheese on toast.

On behalf of cash saving service Raisin.co.uk, researchers surveyed 2,000 Britons to ask what’s been their favourite snack during their time in lockdown.

Cheese on toast topped the list, followed by cheese and onion crisps, a bacon sandwich with ketchup, and cheese and crackers.

Clearly we’re a nation of cheese fans.

The top lockdown snacks, according to a survey of 2,000 Brits

The survey found that snacking is on the up, as is boozing – according to the report, the average Brit is consuming three alcoholic beverages a day.

This bit of research comes as doctors have voiced fears that lockdown could lead to a new health crisis of alcoholism.

It’s perfectly normal to eat or drink more during a stressful time such as lockdown, and to fill the void of boredom with snacks and booze, but if you feel your relationship with either has become problematic, talk to your GP about accessing further support.

But for those of us simply enjoying the freedom of endless snacking, what snack really reigns supreme? Is cheese on toast really the champion of our hearts and stomachs? Or are the people in this survey completely wrong?
