‘Best’ tip to properly store tomatoes to ‘avoid killing flavour and freshness’

Marcus Wareing shares how to store tomatoes for best flavour

Tomatoes are warm weather foods, which continue to ripen when exposed to room temperature or higher.

The general advice from most experts is that if households are wanting to preserve the flavours and aromas of fresh tomatoes they should be kept in a cool location.

However, since most tomatoes are sold or bought a bit before their ideal ripeness to account for the changes they’ll undergo when sitting out, placing them in the fridge will actually halt their progress.

Luckily, one TikToker has shared how to “properly” store them to avoid them tasting bland.

Influencer @cattyabella on TikTok has shared a video that was captioned “how to store your tomatoes properly”.

She said: “If you’re storing your tomatoes in the fridge, you’re making a big mistake.

“The cold actually kills the flavour and freshness by creating enzymes that rupture the cells, making the tomato super pasty when you take it out.”

You may have noticed that tomatoes aren’t refrigerated in the supermarket when you buy them, and there could be a good reason for this.

Whilst many fruits are best kept refrigerated, tomatoes should never be kept in the fridge.

Overexposure to cool air actually harms the makeup of the tomato, which yields grainy, flavourless salad additions.

The influencer then went on to discuss how households are “supposed” to store them.

She said: “The best way to properly store an unripe or perfectly ripe tomato is to put it stem down in a single row away from sunlight.

Once the tomato gets over-ripe and households see that they will not use it for a couple of days, this is only when the fruit can be put in the fridge.

The TikToker explained: “At this point, they’re already ripe so the enzymes won’t disrupt the flavour.”

For anyone wondering how to ripen a tomato faster, this can be done by popping it in a paper bag with a banana.

Leave the bag in a warm spot, just for an afternoon. Any longer and they’ll over-ripen.
