Women share annoying mistakes male authors make when writing female characters – from calling tights 'sexy' to thinking we can all run in heels

Female Tumblr users from around the world have been sharing their advice to male authors – explaining all of the things they get wrong when dreaming up female characters.

The tips are striking a cord with women everywhere and, a Bored Panda thread compiling the best, includes an appeal to describe tights as “itchy” rather than “sexy” and the advice that pretty much one can run in heels.

It was also noted that the removal of a bra was usually a moment of relief – rather than a signal for sex and that hair doesn’t usually “cascade” when taking out of an up do.

The thread was started by Tumblr user Annerocious, who started by sharing: “Dear men writers… Lesser known facts about writing women:

“High heeled shoes don’t become flats if you break the heels off.

“The posts of earrings aren’t sharp.

“Nail polish takes a long time to dry and smudges when wet.

“You can’t hold in a period like pee.

“Inserting a tampon is not arousing or sexual in any way, ever.”

She then encouraged other women to add their own literary pet peeves.

Many pointed out that most of us can't run well in heels – despite many fictional heroines wearing nothing but stilettos.

Another explained that taking off their specs won't likely make them more beautiful – just short-sighted.

She joked: “If we whip them off, we do not become gorgeous fashion models. We become squinty.'

Someone else said that boobs aren't always perky, adding: “They don't just stand there like they're waiting for the fricken [sic] bus.”

Another woman added: “We have never, ever looked in a mirror and silently described our nude bodies to ourselves, especially the size/shape/weight/resemblance to fruit/etc of our breasts.”
