While you may not have thought make up wasn’t vegan, certain ingredients can mean it’s not suitable for those following that lifestyle.
What is vegan beauty?
Vegan beauty means using products which do not contain any animal products.
There are a range of ingredients which aren't vegan-friendly, which means you may need to read the packaging carefully.
Some include carmine, which gives a red pigment, which is made from a certain type of insect.
Beeswax, a common addition particularly in lip care, is also off-limits, as is anything made with honey.
Keratin is made from animal by-products, as is collagen.
Silk and milk proteins are also used in some make up, alongside different types of wool, including lanolin.

If you're committed to only using vegan products, perfume, toothpaste, beauty tools and even make-up remover may not be vegan.
Where can I buy them?
You don't need to go to specialist stores to buy vegan make-up.
Just like other make-up, prices vary from affordable, budget ranges to expensive brands.
High-street stores, including Boots and Superdrug, sell vegan make-up.
The majority of Superdrug's own brand, which includes make up, shampoo, body lotion and more, is suitable for vegans and carries the leaping bunny logo – meaning it's cruelty-free.
You can buy a lot of vegan make-up online as well, and there are some brands which only sell their products online, so it's worth looking around.
Which brands are vegan friendly?
More companies are embracing veganism and making their products vegan and cruelty-free.
It's worth noting not every product which is cruelty-free will necessarily be vegan.
Being cruelty-free means the product has not been tested on animals, but there can be grey areas when it comes to third parties.
There are some ways to double check, and that's by the leaping bunny logo and the vegan society approved logo.
Both of these logos means the products have been certified so you can use them without having to scan the ingredients.
Some well-known brands carry vegan ranges, such as Urban Decay and The Body Shop.
Others, including Emani and E.l.f, are entirely vegan.

Green People's website says: "Most of our products are vegan and carry the Vegan Society logo on the packaging and on the web site detail page.
"However, our organic make-up, a small part of our main range and some of our Organic Babies range are not suitable for vegans.
