A VET has issued an urgent warning to dog owners about a potentially fatal garden danger – keep your pet safe.
Dr James Tate had to perform life-saving surgery on an 11-month-old pup after two inflatable dog toys became lodged in his stomach.
The operation left poor crossbreed, Gus, with an eight-inch scar down his stomach and his owners John and Laura Westbrooke didn't know if their beloved pooch would make it.
Before the incident, Gus had been playing by himself outside when his teeth burst the balls and he managed to swallow them.
After his quick-thinking owners rushed him to Beechwood Vets, in Seacroft, Leeds, veterinary surgeon James was able to remove the near-fatal toys by making an incision into the pooch's stomach.
Dr James Tate told LeedsLive: “Toys are important to a dog’s wellbeing as they stop them becoming bored or anxious and encourage them to exercise.

"But it is important to keep an eye on dogs when they are playing and also to check the toy is the right size for them so they can’t choke or swallow it."
He urged dog owners to bin any damaged toys so there is no risk of parts falling off and being swallowed.
The life-saving surgeon said he was "delighted" to say little Gus made "a full recovery".
Owner John said: “He was with my wife Laura at my sister’s house and was playing with her Toy Poodle.

“His toys are softer than the ones we have. Gus has the biggest mouth, and we don’t have balls at our house for this exact reason.
"If he gets hold of a tennis ball, he will break it and not let go but he is not usually prone to swallowing things."
The relieved owner explained the type of balls Gus swallowed were rubbery which made it impossible for them to be removed via endoscopy.
“We were concerned that the balls were the kind that would pop back up to their usual shape, so he had a really lucky escape", John added.
He praised the "fantastic" vets and knew Gus "was in good hands".
“He came out feeling sorry for himself for the next couple of days", John added.
"He had an eight-inch scar down his stomach, but he is completely fine and back to his usual self.”
This comes as other vets have issued other warnings to keep your dog safe.
Dr Hunter Finn took to TikTok to reveal the small sign that could mean your pooch needs an emergency spinal cord assessment.
Another veterinarian also raised the alarm about five foods you should never give your pet as some could be lethal.
Raisins, onions and garlic were just a few of the examples the vet gave and even revealed that dried grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs.
One more expert revealed the reason why you need to keep common bathroom items away from your dog.
