The common beauty mistakes which are ageing you, from liner under the eye to too much foundation

These are the common mistakes which are making women look older than they really are, from the experts at Beauty Haven. You've been warned ladies…

1. Slap happy

When it comes to foundation, less is more.

They recommend making sure at least some of your natural skin tone is still visible, like Meghan Markle's rule about letting her freckles peep through.

There's no need to have a full face of foundation.

Why not just cover up your 'problem areas' – like redness, dark circles, pigmentation and uneven skin tone – instead?

2. Bags of fun

The dark circles under your eyes get worse as you age, because the skin is thinning.

But covering this with an opaque cream concealer will only make you look worse.

Try use a liquid concealer instead, and apply it sparingly.

Avoid using it outside your eye socket, as the skin naturally creases here – meaning it may look caked on.

3. Draw a line

Under eye liner is a favourite of many women because it accentuates your eyes, but is this for the right reasons?

Lining your eyes can draw attention to dark circles and make your eyes seem smaller.

Beauty Haven recommend also using a brown, grey or navy liner on your upper lids.

And never wear black eyeliner without mascara.

4. Making us blush

Wearing your blush too low is another common tip lots of us make.

The experts explain: "when you place it too low, ie. only on the apples of your cheeks, it looks a bit dated and can draw attention to slackening volume in that area."

Try sweeping the blush on instead, and applying it higher, to really lift your cheekbones.

They add:  "Pay attention to shade choice too. Some choose a brown colour because they think they are adding definition and contouring, but it ends up looking muddy, dull, and like the makeup is just sitting on your skin.

"Others choose a product that is too soft in colour, which can wash you out and age you as well.

"To find the right shade, pinch your cheeks and try to match the natural colour that you get when you actually blush. A flattering shade for most is a neutral rose pink. "

5. Lip service

Another area which creases as we age is the skin around the mouth.

Lay off shiny or bright lip gloss, because this can smudge and make your face look messy.

If you do want to go bright, make sure you use a lip liner.
