Tana Ramsay and daughter Tilly reveal what life is REALLY like in the Ramsay household from who’s the messiest, who does the DIY to how they cope when Gordon gets ‘man flu’

But the author and TV broadcaster has confessed that things in the past year have actually slowed down for the better.

“I no longer have four kids running around the house. I just have Tilly as the other three are at university, so I now manage to actually put my feet up. It’s quite different but I like it,” she tells Fabulous online.

Since twins Holly and Jack, both 18, along with daughter Megan, 20, headed to university this autumn, Tana has had more time to focus on projects close to her heart.

This winter she and youngest daughter Matilda 'Tilly', 16, have joined forces with Boots UK to encourage parents to take their kids, age 10 and above, to get the flu jab.

“Tilly saw her friend suffer from flu quite badly and it was a shock for us both,” Tana says.

“My friend got quite sick and wasn’t able to come to school for a week and I saw how hard it was for her to catch up,” Tilly – who’s just started her A-levels – adds.

“She was bed ridden, aching all over and almost unable to move because of such a high fever. It could have been so easily avoided by a quick injection,” Tana continues.

But while the Ramsay household will be protected from getting the flu as the winter months draw in, it doesn’t mean they’ll avoid enduring the dreaded ‘man flu’.

“Every cold that dad has he turns it into ‘man flu’,” says Tilly about her dad, Gordon, 51.

“We’re all there waiting on him hand and foot as he lies down – getting him Strepsils and man-size tissues.”

“They never have ‘just a cold’ do they?” Tana quips. “Even if men went to get the flu jab they’d still get ‘man flu'.”

But in a family of chefs who makes the best anti-cold remedy?

“Mum,” says Tilly. “She makes a great lemon and honey. And my Nan, actually, who also does an amazing chicken soup.”

“I tend to make things far more complicated than they need to be,” says Tana. “I’ll try to sneak things in like ginger and turmeric. While Tilly’s Nan keeps things simple. Her chicken soup is onions, carrots, chicken and stock.

"She puts it on in the morning and it’s ready by about 6 o’clock at night. She loves to cook everything all day. It’s simple but delicious.”

And it seems Tilly's Mum also has the edge when it comes to the family working together.

Over the past four years Tilly has starred in her own successful children's TV show – Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch. She’s also made several appearances on This Morning and The One Show cooking alongside her famous dad.

But her mum is still her preferred colleague.

“Yes, it’s definitely mum. DEFINITELY!” Tilly says.

“There’s less competition between us and she’s just a lot easier. Work aside, Mum is better when we're cooking too as she helps me clean up while dad makes me do it all, his mess and mine."

“And they are both so messy when they cook!” Tana adds.

But are the men of the house – Gordon and son Jack – also the messiest around the house? It seems not.

“Jack is the tidiest out of them all,” says Tana.

“His bed is always made, his room is immaculate. After Jack, it’s a slippery slope with the girls. It’ll probably be Tilly then Holly and Megan is the messiest."

As for Gordon?

“He’s very tidy when he's not cooking, but he keeps everything. He’ll never have a clear out. He’s a hoarder. If it’s not been used or worn, I say clear it out but he tends to keep it.”

But perhaps he’s keeping those old jeans for a rainy day when he decides the house needs redecorating and he needs to dig out some ‘painting clothes’?

Nope. Tana is the DIY queen, it seems.

“Last Christmas we were in Cornwall and the gas oven broke, but who fixed it just in time? Me. Of course it was me, as I’m the most practical one out of our family. The one who fixes things and the one who does all the DIY.”
