Princess Diana, William and Harry's incredible 'Saturday night routine' revealed… and it involves McDonald's and Blind Date

While you may expect young Prince William and Prince Harry to have a glamorous time at the weekends with their mum, behind closed doors the reality was much more down to earth.

Princess Diana’s former butler and confidante Paul Burrell revealed that the trio had a simple “Saturday night ritual” that was similar to many UK households.

Their late mum would take them to McDonald’s, where they’d select their favourite order – Big Macs and chips.

Then they’d head back to the palace to watch the TV classic Blind Date, and sit on a giant stuffed hippopotamus that Diana had in her lounge.

Paul told the Mirror: “The three of them would nip to McDonald’s for a Big Mac and fries before coming back to watch Blind Date.

“All three of them would squat on this massive, stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in her sitting room.

"They loved Blind Date and I’d hear them all screaming things like “Oh don’t pick him!” and “Lorra, lorra fun”.

The former butler also revealed that Prince Harry and Prince William treasured two photo albums that Princess Diana made for them.

He said: “It was her giving them the story of their lives in pictures and they have their names in gold lettering on the front.

"When they got married and had children of their own, she wanted them to show them – and I’m sure that’s what William is doing with George and Charlotte."

She was easily one of the world’s most glamorous woman at the time, but nothing made Diana happier than being at home with her boys.

Prince Charles introduced the princes to Shakespeare and the opera, but Diana was said to have taken them to not only McDonald’s, but also the cinema and night shelters to meet the homeless.

She also arranged go-karting trips, taught them to ski and wanted them involved in everything.

And they had the best toys in the world — electric motor bikes, electric cars, the best treehouse any kid could ever want, every military uniform from every regiment.

The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards said: “She had the magic touch with her boys.

"When Harry told her he wanted to be a soldier, she took him to an army base where he dressed up in uniform and rode with the troops in an army personnel carrier.

“I remember once at the polo in Windsor, William got too close to the rails. The nanny scolded him and he burst into tears.

“Diana saw this and ran over. She put him on her lap, rubbed his hair gently, said soft words and he stopped crying immediately.

“In August 1993 Diana took the boys to Disney World in Florida. Every kid wants to go. You could see the delight on the boys’ faces.”
