Pedal power: Go for the sporty look in cycling shorts and socks that really pop

The men in lycra don’t know just how ‘fashionable’ they are this season.

The humble cycling short, star of the sporty peloton, is one of the new trends to emerge for the SS19 style season, that and another accessory touch guaranteed to have the marmite factor.

Would you dare to bare your knees and go out in knee-high pop socks? They are sheer, colourful and some come with the chic logo badge of your designer, in this case, Prada.

Cool Italian style queen Miuccia Prada led the way with her homage to the 60s and her satin shorts (above) were deemed so important, they were chosen as the opening look out of 112 designer looks in the Brown Thomas new season showcase which took place in the Grafton Street store.

Shelly Corkery, fashion director of the BT group, said: “I love the cycling short look here which is worn away from the leg. It is like a pencil skirt but more sporty.

“It can work with a blazer or oversized knit but the one thing is you have to have a straight leg, not a curvy one.”

Some women might remember a slight love affair with slim satin shorts back in the 90s when they were called ‘pedal pushers’.

Indeed, there are some female golfers who have never really given up the slim-legged bermuda short so they will be delighted with the cyclical nature of this season’s favourites.

The London Irish designer knocked it right out of the ballpark with his vision for colour and volume. The catwalk event showcased a spectrum of newness and the hottest, most exciting new ready-to-wear brands to arrive include Jil Sanders, Kitri, MM6, Rejina Pyo, Rotate, Stine Goya, Comme Des Garcon Girl, Kenzo and Preen Line.
