My paedo dad abused me for five years from the age of seven – but then he went on the run for 25 years to avoid jail

A MUM-OF-THREE told how her paedophile dad sexually abused her then and then went on the run for 25 years to avoid prison.

For five years from the age of seven, Nicola Kime, now 44, was at the mercy of pervert father, Michael Evans, now 65, until she eventually confided in a school friend.

The police were alerted, and Michael was arrested and charged with abusing his daughter.

But, before he could face justice in his hometown of Grantham, Lincs, he fled 200 miles away.

Thankfully he was caught 25 years later living in Kent and was jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of a string of sex offences against Nicola.

Nicola, from Spalding, Lincs, told Fabulous Digital: “Not only did dad take away my childhood, he has stolen most of my life.

“For years, I was afraid of my own shadow, terrified that dad would hunt me down. I’m so pleased that he’s faced justice now. It was worth the wait.”

In February 1983, Nicola’s mum Ann died of bowel cancer, then aged 33.

Nicola, then aged eight, moved in with her father, Michael, and his girlfriend.

But within weeks of the death of her mother, Michael preyed on his young daughter.

Nicola said: “One night, he crept into my room while I was sleeping and sexually assaulted me. Afterwards, I felt sick and confused. From then on, dad forced me to watch him masturbate."

She added: “It was horrible but I accepted that this is what fathers did to their little girls.”

Nicola dreaded the moment Michael would sneak into her room.

She continued: “One night when I was eight, he tried to rape me. I clamped my legs together so he couldn’t hurt me. Thankfully, he didn't. But I was terrified of him. I felt sick.”

For five years, Nicola lived in fear of her dad. In 1988, when she was 13, she was talking about sex with her friend at school.

Nicola said: “I asked her how often her dad it to her. She looked so shocked and said that her dad had never done it to her. I felt confused. dad had made it seem so normal."

She continued: “The next day, police and a social worker were waiting to speak to me at school, so she must have told someone.

“I revealed what happened and was taken to live with my mum’s sister. I finally felt free.”

In the meantime, Michael was arrested and charged with attempted rape, indecent assault and indecency with a child.

But the day he was due to appear in court for the trial, he never showed up.

Police launched a manhunt but they couldn’t find him.

Nicola said: “Ever since that day, I lived in fear that he’d be looking for me.

"Whenever I went out, I thought I’d bump into him or that he might be watching me. I became too scared to leave the house. Despite police searches, he’d simply vanished.

“And as the years moved on, my hopes that he would be found died.”

Then one morning in 2013, two police officers knocked on her door.

Nicola said: “They told me they’d found dad. It had been over 25 years. I trembled and burst into tears.

“They revealed that they were reviewing a missing person cold case, the disappearance of a woman called Susan in May 1988.

“She’d walked out on her husband, but hadn’t been found since. She’d been found living under a false name in Kent and dad was living with her.

“Dad had changed his last name by deed poll from Kime to Evans. I couldn’t believe it. I’d given up all hope, I felt so overwhelmed.”

In December 2014, Michael, now 65, of Margate, Kent, appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

During the trial, Nicola discovered that Susan had been the wife of her dad’s friend.

They’d ran off together to avoid him getting a prison sentence and Michael had used Susan’s husband’s identity to avoid being tracked down by the police.

He’d worked for a time in Greece, using a false passport to leave the UK.

Michael was found guilty of two charges of attempted rape, six charges of indecent assault, two charges of indecency with a child and perverting the course of justice at Lincoln Crown Court. He was jailed for 12 years.

Nicola finished: “I’m so pleased Dad was jailed. His sentence has helped me to move forward with my life. And the fact that he ran from the police shows how scared he was.

“For years, I’ve felt like I’ve been running from my past. Now I’ve realised that I wasn’t to blame.”
