My mother-in-law ruined my marriage on Christmas Day by telling me my husband was still in love with his ex

So one woman was understandably heartbroken when her mother-in-law chose December 25 to give her some horrifying news about her husband.

The woman – known only as Amanda – revealed her story on Kidspot, admitting that she'd "always dreaded" having Christmas lunch with her husband's mother.

Her mother-in-law had initially seemed happy when Amanda and her husband Matt got together, telling her it was great that she'd "brought joy" back into his life after a divorce.

His ex-wife Christie had cheated on him with her boss – an older, wealthy man.

But since then, she'd learnt that her mother-in-law had a "very nasty streak" and a "sharp tongue".

After her in-law had "caused more tears than she cares to think about", things really came to a head on Christmas Day last year.

Amanda explains that Matt had answered his phone twice during Christmas lunch, telling her that his friend Rob was on the other end.

She explains: "My mother-in-law made some cryptic comments such as: 'Looks like Matt's mind is elsewhere today!'

"Later I heard her say to my brother-in-law: 'I wonder what she wants?' but I didn't pick up who she'd been talking about."

It was after Matt had been outside for half an hour that Amanda's mother in-law – who was "possibly onto her fourth G&T" – dropped her bombshell.

Amanda says: "She turned to me and said: 'You know he's talking to Christie. He never got over her. In fact, he's still in love with her. She's single now so I think your days are numbered.

"That's exactly what she said, word for word!"

Devastated, Amanda headed straight outside to confront her husband.

He admitted that he still had "strong feelings" for his ex-wife but that he didn't want to end his marriage.

A year on, Matt is having therapy – and appears to have been faithful.

But Amanda still marks the day down as her "worst Christmas ever", adding that she "really doesn't know" if they'll still be together next year.

Let's hope she manages to make some better memories next Tuesday.
