Is this the worst beauty advice ever? A supermodel has suggesting using SUNBURN to contour

But we do not advocate this advice from supermodel Joan Smalls – who is suggesting you shape your face using SUNBURN.

Joan made the bonkers suggestions in US Weekly, suggesting you apply SPF like a highlighter.

She recommended applying it only on the high points of her face, like the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose.

“It makes the skin lighter because you’re not tanning as much there,” she told US Weekly.

But her advice goes totally against everything else we have heard – including what the NHS say.

What is skin cancer?

According to the NHS, skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world.

Non-melanoma skin cancer refers to a group of cancers that slowly develop in the upper layers of the skin.

The term non-melanoma distinguishes these more common types of skin cancer from the less common skin cancer known as melanoma, which can be more serious.

In the UK, more than 100,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed each year. It affects more men than women and is more common in the elderly.

The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing mole.

This can occur anywhere on the body, but the most commonly affected areas are the back in men and the legs in women. Melanomas are uncommon in areas which are protected from sun exposure, such as the buttocks and the scalp.

Knowing the difference between a freckle and a cancerous mole could be the difference between life and death.

There are more than 15,000 new cases of skin cancer in the UK each year, according to Cancer Research UK.

You can tell if your mole is cancerous using this ABCDE guide.

They say – and we recommend you follow this – that you should apply suncream everywhere on your face if it's sunny.

They recommend using at least a SPF rating of 15.

The NHS said: "Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears – and head if you have thinning or no hair – but a wide-brimmed hat is better.

"Sunscreen needs to be reapplied liberally and frequently, and according to the manufacturer's instructions.

"This includes applying it straight after you've been in water – even if it's "water resistant" – and after towel drying, sweating, or when it may have rubbed off."

So, Joan, we won't be following your advice anytime soon.
