I'm a professional baker and I tried the 3 popular cake mixes – but only one came out on top for its buttery richness | The Sun

A PROFESSIONAL baker made white cake from three boxed mixes and found one to stand out over the others.

A baking expert compared Pillsbury's Moist Supreme, Duncan Hines' Perfectly Moist, and Betty Crocker's Super Moist white mixes, but only one took the cake.

Even though the mixes from Betty Crocker and Pillsbury turned out deliciously, the baker at Insider reports that the Duncan Hines mix made the most buttery, rich cake.

Alana Al-Hatlani baked all three cakes in the same pans and with the same methods. All three cakes were frosted with vanilla frosting.

The baker said that she would recommend all three of the mixes, but that the Duncan Hines mix stood out slightly because the layers rose evenly and turned out golden brown.

The cake layers were notably thicker than the other cakes, but still felt light and tasted very buttery and moist.

Alana said that Betty Crocker's cake had the fluffiest texture of the three, but that it didn't have much flavor on its own.

The baker also noted that the Pillsbury cake was the sweetest of the three, but that it was moist and fluffy.

"Call me Goldilocks, but the Pillsbury cake verged on too sweet, and the Betty Crocker one wasn't quite sweet enough," Alana wrote.

"Duncan Hines' cake was a perfect middle."

The cakes were judged on a handful of criteria, including the cake to frosting ratio, and the flavor and texture of both the cake and the frosting.

The overall winner was the cake from Safeway. The grocery chain's vanilla cake was light, fluffy, and not overly sweet – and at a great price point.
