How 90s streetwear brands like Kappa and Fila are making a comeback

Monday’s edition of the New York Post with the Nineties label’s name as a cover advert, pictured, was a sellout, with copies now being flogged on eBay for more than £15.

In the past, the brand has sold bricks with its logo – and all the hype works. Mile-long queues often form at its stores for its limited-edition ranges.

But other Nineties street brands are also making a comeback.

So dig out your trackies and dust down your bucket hat as Clemmie Fieldsend and Siobhan O’Connor hail the return of some old favourites.

KAPPA

LIKE her older sister Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner is a major trendsetter.

The 21-year-old posted a snap to her 113million followers on Instagram last year ditching her bodycon in favour of Kappa tracksuit bottoms.

The brand was loved by sports fans, Britpop lovers and the girl band All Saints.

It became a hot name in 1984 and peaked in the mid- Nineties, having made clothing in native Italy since 1967.

Kappa got a bad reputation as it was linked with football hooligans and Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard. But thanks to Kylie, those trackies at the back of your wardrobe could have life in them yet.

BUFFALO

NEVER one to shy away from a daring trend, singer Rita Ora, 27, ditched her stilettos for Buffalo trainers out in London in June.

The Spice Girls favoured the chunky footwear for their high-kicking antics when they ruled the charts in the late Nineties.

The German brand first started making shoes in 1979. Now high street chains Office and Schuh are restocking the old favourite.

FILA

LAST August, less than two months after welcoming twins, Beyonce wowed us all by posting a snap of her in a crop top.

And not some tatty old one – a bright yellow Fila top.

Fila was started in 1911 by two Italian brothers who moved from making underwear to sportswear.
The label peaked in the mid-Nineties but is now back in Asos, Topshop and Urban Outfitters.

SUPREME

HAILEY Baldwin is a Supreme superfan, as is her fiance Justin Bieber. They often wear the brand’s hit collaboration with luxe brand Louis Vuitton.

The 21-year-old model went out in New York with a small bag costing an eye-watering £2,410 from the collection.

Paired with a preppy cardigan, faded jeans and high-top trainers, her look was pure Nineties poster girl.

CHAMPION

“JENNY From The Block” showed she is still a streetwear star as she was spotted wearing Champion.

The US label’s jumpers were a big hit back in the Nineties and the logo popped up as Jennifer Lopez was seen running errands in NYC in July.

Champion also made jerseys for basketball teams in the NBA in the Nineties, as well as football team Wigan.

UMBRO

THE footie favourite has landed on Love Island’s shores.

Founded in Cheshire in 1924 by Harold Humphreys, the England national team began wearing its kits in 1954. The relationship between the two lasted for more than 50 years.

Now Umbro is scoring with reality stars like Olivia Attwood, 27, going head-to-toe in Umbro with a sports bra and onesie.

SCHOTT

MODEL Winnie Harlow can make any outfit look good and the 24-year-old turned this puffer jacket into a go-to airport look.

Touching down in Toronto, Canada, this year, Winnie showed off her svelte figure in a tracksuit and Schott bomber jacket, looking like she had stepped off the catwalk, not an airport runway.

The brand’s flight jacket was an Eighties and Nineties staple.
