Harry Kane suffers backlash after ‘absurd message’ praising his wife for giving birth without painkillers

The English footballing star came under fire after posting a tweet following the arrival of daughter Vivienne Jane with Katie Goodland.

The proud dad, 25, gushed: “Our beautiful addition to the family! Vivienne Jane Kane. So proud of @KateGoodlandx for having the most amazing water birth with no pain relief at all #mygirls #hypnobirthing.”

But some people slammed Kane, saying there was no reason he should be "proud" because his wife didn't have pain relief.

Now Kane has responded to his critics.

He said: "Let’s get one thing straight, any women can give birth however they would like. I’m very proud of my fiancée for doing it the  way she wanted and we both learnt a lot from hypnobirthing."

This is the second time Katie has opted for the birthing practice as she previously "had the most amazing water birth" during her daughter Ivy's delivery in January

While his heartfelt message has been liked over 71,000 times, some Twitter users were less than impressed with his message.

Radio host Julia Hartley-Brewer said: “I’m delighted for @HKane & his family but why on earth should anyone be “proud” of not having pain relief while giving birth? Utterly absurd! There’s a reason why women get pain relief during labour: because it bloody hurts.”

She added: “Remember, ladies, if you have an epidural during your labour, you’re a wimp and should be ashamed of yourselves. And the same goes for all you men having open heart surgery. Just breathe….”

And Julia wasn’t the only person to feel Harry should have thought twice before saying he was proud for her not taking pain relief.

Author Adrian Selby said: “What's wrong with pain relief? Or am I missing the point?”

And one wrote: “Find it depressing that @HKane highlights lack of pain relief for his wife. All sorts of messaging in that. One to acknowledge personally not publicly surely? Safe/healthy Mum and baby surely more important.”

Meanwhile another wrote: “This. Pain relief exists for a reason, giving birth isn’t a competition or a time to act tough.”

Some people, however, said they didn’t see what was wrong with his message.

A Twitter user added: “Find it really odd Harry Kane is getting stick because he said his partner managed to birth her baby without pain relief. It's great that we have intervention there if we need it but a woman knows her own body and if she can give birth without it then surely that's a good thing?”

And some mums equally praised Kate, having been through child birth themselves.

A woman commented: “Congratulations, no pain relief what a woman!!!!! Unless you’ve experienced contractions you wont know how hard that is.”

Dr Sarah Jarvis told the Sun Online: "There is no ‘best’ form of childbirth and certainly nobody should tell any woman how she should feel or what she should want.

"In my experience, that can be a recipe for disaster. The Royal College of Midwives’ Better Births Initiative recognises that our priority must always be about making sure that every woman has the best birth possible, with the best possible outcome for her baby.

"Sometimes that might involve a caesarean section for the baby’s safety, and nobody would ever suggest that should be carried out without pain relief.

Long-term childhood sweethearts Harry and Kate now share two daughters and got engaged in July last year.

Their two daughters Ivy and Vivienne also share the same middle name Jane.

Reflecting on her first birth experience in January 2017, Katie said she was "very scared about labour and was recommended to try hypnobirthing."

Considering she also needed "no pain relief or gas and air" during that delivery (along with the help of "incredible birthing partner" Harry Kane), it'll come as no surprise that Katie settled on the same birthing plan this time round.

Along with the thousands of comments congratulating the couple of their "gorgeous" new arrival, the Tottenham player's post left fans in stitches in how the picture made it seem like he was wearing a DRESS.

In more baby news, these are the royal pregnancy rules Meghan Markle will have to follow when she and Prince Harry have a baby.

And the mum who had her sister's baby has spoken of the 'indescribable love' she feels for the newborn.

And this baby born with a full head of hair is now sporting eight inch locks at just six-months-old.
