From lairy Lycra to space-age sunnies: How the Kardashians are to blame for the return of fashion’s biggest faux pas

From Kourtney in Lycra, to Kim in neon tracksuits – and even five-year-old North West rocking a popular '80s trend, it certainly seems the Kardashians can pull off anything.

And while the Kardashian clan are enjoying several throwback trends, their colossal influence online means their followers are, too.

Over the last few months, you might have noticed a surge in 80s-style Lycra cycling shorts, neon tracksuits, skin-tight bodysuits and ripped denim available online at popular e-retailers.

It seems if the Kardashians are wearing neon green bodysuits one week, it won't be long before a similar budget version is being sold on the likes of Fashion Nova, PrettyLittleThing, Missguided or Boohoo.

And with a single sponsored post on Kylie Jenner's Instagram worth £760K, it's not hard to see why bargain retailers are tapping into the Kardashian trend.

In fact, thanks to a collaboration with 39-year-old Kourtney, Boohoo's UK sales rose by a third – to £180m – in the final quarter of 2018, while Nasty Gal surged by 74 per cent and PrettyLittleThing by a whopping 95 per cent, reports the Guardian.

Author of Fashion and Celebrity Culture, Pamela Church-Gibson explained: "They can sell anything.

"[They're the centre of an] alternate fashion system" which "is not people looking at pictures of fashion shows and interpreting the trends themselves, it’s women wanting to look a certain way, social media providing those images, and new retailers, particularly retailers that use social media a lot, like Boohoo, picking up on these trends and bucking it to their advantage."

Oversized jackets

Disastrous denim

Their ability to influence the sales of just about anything explains a rise in popularity towards certain '80s faux pas – ones many would never imagine could make a comeback.

When Kourtney posed in a red bodysuit on holiday last year, fans went wild, with one tagging a friend in the post and commenting: "Ur next outfit with the shoes" while another said: "She makes everything look too good."

Unsurprising, then, that weeks later the likes of Fashion Nova were stocking similar styles.

Lairy Lycra

If it's not Kim rocking distressed, oversized denim jackets, it's model Kendall Jenner stepping out in '80s-esque sportswear, bonkers blazers and one very popular trend – high-waisted denim shorts.

Even "momager" Kris Jenner has been throwing back 30 years ago, channelling her inner Madonna with chain belts and sheer tops.

Perhaps the most bizarre trend to come around is aviator sunglasses, seen on practically every Kardashian – including five-year-old North West.

A few years ago they would have been scarcely found anywhere but the dusty corners of eBay – now, a quick search on Google yields hundreds of products.

According to Mintel, 64 per cent of Generation Z (those under 22 years old) say social media influences their fashion choices.

And with the Kardashians at the top of the Instagram food chain, it's showing no signs of slowing down.

Having the power to influence just about anything, we wonder which faux pas they'll be fashioning in 2019?

Earlier this week, we told you Holly Willoughby’s new M&S denim collection is launching next month- and it’s going to be in twice as many stores.

We also revealed The Wedgie Rise is the new eye-watering trend taking over Instagram – and stars from Emily Ratajkowski to Chloe Ferry are big fans.

And we showed you this YouTube star tries out Kylie Jenner’s budget range for Fashion Nova and says she ‘looks like a Teletubby’.
