Former model Jo Wood chats rock 'n' roll royalty, her ex-husband Ronnie and getting older

I never eat processed food and I like to cook from fresh. The most important thing in life is to eat good food, because without your health, how can you be happy?

You changed your lifestyle 30 years ago – how long could your old rock ‘n’ roll ways have continued for?

I’d probably be dead actually!

You’ve said you went for days without eating or sleeping…

Yeah, the body doesn’t need much food, but sleep deprivation is very bad for you. Something had to give, and it was my appendix [which Jo discovered was perforated in 1991]. It was a blessing in disguise really. It came to a point where I was going crazy, night after night, and that was a real eye-opener for me.

Would you do anything differently if you had your time again?

No, I had fun. Although what I wouldn’t do is smoke. I used to smoke a pack a day but stopped five years ago. The last 10 years I only smoked American Spirit – they’re organic! I didn’t have my first cigarette until I was 22, just before I met Ronnie [Wood, 71, Jo’s ex-husband].

Do you still speak to the Rolling Stones’ wives and girlfriends?

Yeah, Patti Hansen [Keith Richard’s wife] and I will always be friends. Patti and Keith live in Connecticut, but I see them whenever they’re back. I didn’t go to Jerry’s wedding to Rupert Murdoch in 2016, but I did go to [Mick and Jerry’s son] Jimmy’s wedding in 2015.

Are you still in touch with Ronnie?

I spoke to him the other day because we’re organising our daughter Leah’s 40th birthday party this month. Ronnie and the twins [Gracie and Alice, two, with wife Sally Humphreys] came to mine on Christmas Eve, too.

Can you see yourself marrying for a third time?

I wouldn’t mind, but it would have to be the right man.

You’re on Channel 4’s Celebrity Island this month – how was that?

It was easier than Strictly! [Jo was on Strictly in 2009.] I absolutely loved the experience. It was a total detox from social media, TV… Everybody should go to the island and realise the most important things in life are water, shelter and food.

Did anyone not pull their weight?

Yes, but I can’t tell you who. And there was somebody who was very annoying: Eric Roberts [Julia Roberts’ brother].

He’s a spoilt actor – he has a funny attitude. We won’t be staying in touch!

BTW

  • Jo and Ronnie were married for 24 years, divorcing in 2009.
  • She stays in shape by boxing twice a week.
  • Jo is a keen artist and has a house in Spain where she is planning to paint a mural.

What else are you up to this year?

I’m working on a picture book of all my old snaps from ’77 onwards that I took backstage and in hotel rooms.

Any incriminating ones?

I’d never use the ones where you can see Ronnie’s bum and stuff!

What really riles you?

Road rage! I drive around London and get really angry with people.

It’s the only time I really go: “What the f**k are they doing?”

  • Watch Jo on Celebrity Island, tonight, 9pm, Channel 4.
