Dip powder nails are the latest manicure trend… and they last twice as long as gels

IF you're a dedicated acrylic or gels fan, listen up – there's a new nail trend on the rise and it could be a game changer.

Say hello to "dip powder" nails – which although similar to gels – don't require UV rays and last twice as long.

The treatment is said to last up to a month and involves dipping your nail into a pot of coloured powder.

The process begins with a base coat, followed by the powder and finally a sealant (which replaces the need for UV).

There are glitter options too – in fact, the possibilities are endless, with dip powder nails offering just as much design freedom as gels and acrylics.

The nails can also be double dipped for extra coverage.

How cool is @kiaraskynails' dip powder polish? To apply, you first need to use a bond polish to the whole nail to make sure the color sticks, followed by a base coat to 3/4 of the nail. Next, dip your nail into a primer-like natural powder, then do another coat of the bond. After that, you dip your nail into the powder color of your choice and tap off the excess powder, then apply another coat of the base, and do another dip into the powder. Finally, brush on one last coat of the base and let your nails air dry.Have you dipped your fingernails into this unique manicure method? #regram #ManiMonday

With all nail enhancements there's a risk to your natural nail, but dip powder is believed to be the milder option.

It's thought the process adds an extra layer of protection to your nail, reducing the risk of breakage or damage.

Many formulas also claim to contain vitamins to help strengthen the nail bed and after one woman discovered a melanoma after getting her nails done, perhaps the most noteworthy benefit is the fact it doesn't require a UV lamp.

The only real snag to dip powder is the hygiene risk associated with dipping your nails in a communal powder pot.

For this reason, many salons simply stick to acrylic or gel – but it can be worked around by the manicurist painting the powder directly onto your nails.

While prices vary per salon, dip powder nails are thought to be a little more expensive than gels – but if they last twice as long, it could be worth the extra pennies.
