Capes, corsetry… and that was just the men at the 2019 Golden Globes

Lady Gaga always faced a challenge in reprising Judy Garland's role in A Star is Born, and for the Golden Globes red carpet, the performer paid homage to her on-screen predecessor.

Other risk-takers among the men included American Horror Story star, Australian Cody Fern, in a half-sheer black shirt and Maison Margiela "hoof" shoes, which feature a daring split toe, while winner Ben Whishaw's velvet jacket with silver embroidery also received plenty of attention.

One woman who couldn't settle on one look was Globes co-host and winner Sandra Oh, who served up no fewer than four outfits for the night, including two white gowns and a red dress in which she made her soon to be iconic "I see you" speech about ethnic diversity and representation to wrap up the ceremony's opening monologue.

Diversity was also a huge theme in the best-dressed list, with Thandie Newton sporting her natural hair with a silver dress that featured a "binding" cross-over midriff, one of the mini-trends on the red carpet (see also: Rosamund Pike, with bonus silver bolero).

One of the strongest silhouette trends of the night, which is also expected to be as big in fashion this year, was the bow, with a number of stars including Penelope Cruz, Dakota Fanning and Constance Wu tying themselves in knots.

New York-based Australian stylist Cat Pope, who styled actor Tony Shalhoub, said her best dressed list included Australian Yvonne Strahovski, who stars in The Handmaid's Tale, in mint Alberta Ferretti, "which made her look like a leading lady".

"I'm so excited to see what's to come in the future from her," Pope said.

Pope also loved Julia Roberts' look, which included a strapless bustier with a train over pants, and Lupita Nyong'o, who reportedly teamed her electric blue Calvin Klein fringed dress with shoes from a high-street boutique that cost $US45 ($63).

But the winner of the "comfort masked as glam" award ultimately went to The Good Place star Jameela Jamil, who let her social media followers in on a little secret that helped her withstand the nippy Los Angeles weather: "An experienced woman wears jeans under her Golden Globes gown beacause it's FORKING (sic) cold," she tweeted to her 526,000 followers.
