As POPSUGAR’s fashion editor and resident style expert, Sarah Wasilak describes her fashion sense as “truly a mixed bag.” She’ll dress sporty one day and easily channels a bohemian vibe the next. But the one common factor that ties together her closet is longevity. “Will this be an item I wear once and then get tired of? I want to know when I’m buying something — even if it’s affordable, and I’m not splurging — that I’m going to be able to reinvent new ways to wear it and actually be excited about it for months, even a full year,” she says. “At the end of the day, I treasure versatile and unique pieces that are standout and colorful. Something that’s just eccentric or really colorful is so me. You never know what I might wear next.”
In addition to multi-dimensional, Sarah feels layers are the number one thing a good Fall outfit needs. “I like to think of the perfect Fall outfit as something that has been built, piece by piece, sort of like a lego tower,” she says. “Fall is a transitional season, so you never know when you might be too hot or too cold, and your clothes should account for that.”
Ahead, Sarah takes us inside her dream Fall closet, curated exclusively with Kohl’s pieces, and shares three layered outfits she’s loving this season. “I styled each look completely different to speak to my ever-changing mood, which totally affects the outfit I put on in the morning,” she says. “Since I seamlessly slip from sporty to boho to edgy when it comes to my wardrobe, I wanted to style looks that show my closet’s versatility.”

“Your outfit should speak to your mood every single day. Just wear what you want and what you like, and don’t let trends dictate your closet,” Sarah says. “When you operate this way, you’ll feel confident in your clothes, and that is, without a doubt, the most important thing.” Sarah’s favorite piece in this look is her logo tee. “I love to rep a quality, all-American brand that’s been around for awhile. This is also a piece I can style every season of the year,” she says.
When it comes to creating your own perfect wardrobe, Sarah advises reaching for layers and transitional pieces, like the varsity cardigan and denim jacket that maintains the red and blue theme here. “I love a look that’s stylish and eye-catching, but comfortable, versatile, and nonrestricting at the same time,” she says. “I could wear this outfit all day long — literally from breakfast with a friend to shopping to dinner and drinks — and feel good but confident and definitely not uncomfortable, thanks to platform loafers, which still lend me a bit of height as someone who’s petite.”

“I know it’s not the most convenient, but I love a jumpsuit for traveling because it’s something you can wear again and again as a staple one-and-done piece on any trip,” Sarah says. “I tend to wear jumpsuits just like this one on long car rides or on the plane so that I can save some room in my suitcase.” But while jumpsuits are definitely a hero piece for her, Sarah is especially enamored with bomber jackets this season.
“The striped bomber is my favorite item here, as it’s the one piece I need to turn any outfit into a sporty look, or something that’s more relaxed and less serious,” she says. “When it comes to Fall dressing specifically, the goal isn’t to build up a treasure chest of coats that are warm and cozy enough alone, but to invest in items that can easily be taken on and off. This jacket is a perfect example. “In addition, Sarah chose sneakers to keep her look “cool and sporty,” as well as a statement bag for a touch of glamour. “A designer bag offers a stylish wink and sends out the obvious message that I didn’t forget to accessorize,” she says.

In look number three, Sarah is all about her white booties. “They’re the perfect shape — a touch of ’80s with a pin-thin kitten heel — but I also love the color. White is great for wearing with so many different looks,” she says. When it comes to versatility, Sarah is also a fan of stripes and florals — especially together.
“I love mixing prints, and florals and stripes can be a go-to so long as the color palette works,” she says. “While my dusty pink accessories speak to the feminine vibe of the maxi, black and white stripes and cherry red sunglasses in a cat-eye shape are an edgy touch and a little something unexpected. This is the perfect outfit for a casual brunch or daytime event with friends that’s relaxed — but where we might be taking pictures. And this sweater is a key layering piece I can turn to time and time again.”
